Microsoft backs HTML5 over own proprietary Silverlight

Apple Online Store“Microsoft server president Bob Muglia late this week confirmed a broader shift at the company away from Silverlight on the web and towards HTML5,” Electronista reports.

“Silverlight was now primarily the development platform for Windows Phone 7, but more cross-platform efforts would rely on the more universal standard,” Electronista reports. “Muglia stressed to ZDNet that Silverlight would still run on Macs and (indirectly) Linux systems, but HTML5 was the only guarantee of support for the iPhone and Pad. ‘HTML is the only true cross platform solution for everything, including [the] iOS platform,’ he said.”

  1. I love it. Take that Adobe (mud hut).

Once you were a great Mac friendly developer, now you are more like a barnacle I have to scrape off the bottom of my boat. Go away.

  3. I don’t see this yet. Today I’ve seen an ad for Silverlight on several websites. It was promoted as cross-platform development platform for mobile phones and the web. Microsofts phones don’t support HTML5 anyway.

  5. It is a good strategy. Microsoft will always have its platform to run Silverlight. Hurting Adobe and get it off of Windows helps MS and hurt Android that may want to use the claim to run Flash as an advantage. With companies using CMS for their websites more and mor, even the need for Dreamweaver is down. Adobe will be really hurting soon.

  7. So much for the recent meeting between the big wigs at Microsoft and Adobe… The people at Microsoft aren’t stupid and see where things are going. This is a business and they have to make money wherever it is and, as a software developer, the iPhone and iPad represent opportunity as well as a threat.

Sure Microsoft competes with Apple in the platform space but Microsoft is more focused on going after Android right now. For one, all the WP7 phone vendors are also Android handset makers. That is more of a direct competition with Android than the iPhone.

  9. I was at the Apple store at Mall of America in Bloomington, MN today. Every chair at every table was packed. I heard one guy ask for assistance at the entrance because he wanted iPads for the family.

  11. Well let’s see if this is good news. Last time Microbrain got involved in the Internet, they messed up the evolving standards to create the mess that we have today, where every web developer has to cater to the M$ Excreter standard of web browsers.
