Mercury News’ Cassidy: Let’s tap Apple’s genius for public works

Apple Online Storehere.

MacDailyNews Take: The real question of government versus private enterprise is argued on too philosophical and abstract a basis. Theoretically, planning may be good. But nobody has ever figured out the cause of government stupidity and until they do (and find the cure) all ideal plans will fall into quicksand. – Richard Feynman (What Do You Care What Other People Think?: Further Adventures of a Curious Character, pages 90-91)

  1. This is a stupid article. This has absolutely nothing to do with ‘public works’ projects. This is about Apple identifying a location for their store and spending the dough to get people in the door (whey they spend money on Apple products). The fact that they spruced up a subway station is incidental. This is Capitalism 101.

IMO, Apple would be horrible at public works projects. They don’t listen to anyone but themselves and don’t care what the critics say. Name a recent public works project that did not get designed by a committee and tried to do please everyone in the community?

  3. People who say things like this are so annoying. “Gee, maybe Apple should make cars!”

    “Forget big Government…” blah blah.

Apple is a business. Government is what it is, a monster that produces nothing, only confiscates. It has no need to do things well. Mediocrity, even sub-mediocrity will suffice. You have a problem with what Government produces, it will simply confiscate more.

Its a bad day for me and government. A few months ago, Verizon came through the neighborhood, and in 2 days, ripped the street apart, installed fiber and god knows what, put it all back together, smoothed it over, not potholes, beautiful work. Street never looked that good.

Over the last two weeks there was a leak. Government came in tore up a little chunk of street each day. Union workers put up signs, hung out mostly, talked, made sure they were gone by 3.

Street is still in shambles, and oh yeah, they cut the fiber accidentally, and no estimate as to when they will be finished.

Gee. Maybe we should have Apple fix the street.

Nobody has figured out the cause of private sector stupidity either. Both can be equally stupid.

The government is simply a reflection of ourselves. We can act like we don’t own it but we do. The private sector is no better.

Life is imperfect. Deal with it.

  7. You want to know what’s wrong with government? The candidates running to replace them are bigger idiots, have less integrity and are willing to lie, cheat and steal to get into office than those in office already. Look at the panoply of human disfunction, anti-intellectualism and pure malice amongst the tea party scumbags.

Hard to believe, but until people with smarts and integrity decide to run for office there is little hope. Both parties MUST purge themselves of the sociopaths, misanthropes and radical fundamentalist ideologues of all political persuasions and let the moderates take control.

  9. Somehow laying a cable and replacing a water pipe seem to be mutually exclusive. Not quite the same task. Clearly you have done neither one.

But your overall perception of government is ‘monster’ and ‘confiscate’ is indicative not really understanding that it isn’t ‘one government’ You pay federal tax for air traffic control, highways, the Center for Decease control, Customs exams on importations, and ag and meat inspections, Fish and Wildlife inspectors, park rangers and that’s off the top of my head. You pay state and city taxes for your local library, city streets, public area trash pickup etc. Part of being in a ‘society’. That why you pay taxes.

You imply private industry could do better. You are not alone in this but -I don’t want private companies controlling the skies, monitoring decease, conducting health and safety exams or managing our parks service, or city planning, or a thousand other things that are ‘inherently governmental’

Why? Business are the business to make money, and thats absolutely important. They need to make money for their shareholders or owners. That’s their reason for being. Government work isn’t in the business to make money because not everything we do as a society is about making money.

I’m glad a privately owned firm isn’t responsible for my curbs or sewer system. They would probably insist on the cheaper chinese sewer pipe, or chinese concrete because it they need to show a profit at the end of the month.

So what if my neighbor insisted on the cheaper HP concrete for his sidewalk and I wanted Apple concrete which looks better, lasts longer, is more stylish and I’m willing to pay extra for it.? One neighbor doen’t want the street paved, who needs disable ramps? Why do I have to pay for a bike lane in front of My property? etc. etc. Business shouldn’t be in the business of government, and government should simply regulate government fairly same rules apply to all business fairly.

  11. I think the quality people (you know, the ones with integrity, honesty, and a conception of the term “public service”) don’t run for office because they know they would have to make a pact with the devil in order to be elected. Look at the typical campaign ad.. it is truely disheartening to see what it takes to get people vote for a candidate. Appeal to the lowest common denominator…

  13. I love listening to these whiners complaining about big government. “Government never did anything right; it just confiscates, blah blah blah.” But their kids go to socialist schools; they drive on socialist roads; and the moment their home catches on fire, I’ll bet they’ll call their local socialist fire department.

    Dorks.

  15. “Pure malice” is certainly a Bad Thing, but I see no more of it — and perhaps less — in the Tea Party movement than in other sectors of the political spectrum.

As for anti-intellectualism, that’s often a Good Thing, as demonstrated by our cultural and political history. It’s especially productive when practiced by true intellectuals. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  17. Pathetic argument dude. Big, Marxist, government absolutely sucks. These people hate the public and want complete control over us. They hate the constitution. They want absolute power. Not going to happen without a fight. Public schools for the most part suck. Its up to parents to de-brief their children from the socialist-union teachers brainwashing. Bare minimum governing is what works best. Stay the he’ll out of our lives and pockets you scum bags.
