The critics are losing the Apple price argument

Apple Online Store“On this week’s episode of The Tech Night Owl LIVE, we talk with Laptop magazine’s Avram Piltch about Apple’s spanking new MacBook Air,” Gene Steinberg reports for Tech Night Owl. “Along with reports that the product may already be flying off the shelves, particularly the 11.6-inch version, the early reviews are nothing short of spectacular.”

“Piltch, who is certainly no ardent fan of Apple, has high praise for this revision of this sexy thin and light notebook, and it’s not just the performance factor,” Steinberg reports. “You see, compared to other notebooks that use solid state storage, the Air is actually priced competitively. It may even be cheaper than some of the generic PC alternatives, simply because Apple is able to get the best price on flash memory.”

Steinberg reports, “With a base price of $999, the entry-level MacBook Air may not be the cheapest notebook on the planet, but the designs that come closest cost even more.”

“Now take a look at the promised iPad killers that are slowly coming to market. Some companies are tying them in to two-year data plans with wireless carriers to make them seem less expensive, but soon as you add up the price of admission — particularly in the months where Wi-Fi access is sufficient for you — you’ll find that the iPad is a much better deal,” Steinberg reports.

  1. I know they are not talking about the long term cost. I thought the PCers look at upfront cost. You, cheaper is better.

Wow, now Apple is changing the very thought process that people use. Before long, Microsoft will be some word you will have to find in a dictionary.

  3. This critic is not convinced.

I got myself a self installed Ubuntu HP mini with 10″ screen with single Atom w/integrated graphics, anti-glare screen with tax for $290.

Yes the 11″ MBA is a dual core, but it has a nasty glossy screen and it also costs $999 plus tax.

I already have a $3000 dual core MacBook Pro, the 11″ MBA is just too expensive for a near disposable netbook.

  5. @ NCG598,

“Before long, Microsoft will be some word you will have to find in a dictionary.”

Before long, Microsoft will be some word you will have to find with a dictionary App.

A minor correction, I know, but it had to be done.

We got it (over and over). So don’t get one. The MBA’s aren’t for everyone but for those that need it, it’s a great machine. And we are all impressed that you have the Ubuntu HP mini.

As the article says, with the new MBA’s, the price disparity is not really there anymore.

  9. @ Mark Bizzarro. Do you know the difference between a Netbook and a laptop?

For a start, a netbook does not have CD/DVD drive so unless you upload software via USB stick you are stuck with the configuration you received yours. A netbook does what it says on the label, operate via the internet with expanded capability if you have access to cloud storage.

And what are the resolution of those screens you only gave dimensions for?

    HP – 1025 x 576 – integrated graphics
    Apple – 1366 x 768 – NVIDIA GeForce 320M

You get what you pay for. But I guess if you consider it disposable you’re not apt to spend much anyway.

Did you miss the part about the flash based memory? Why bother comparing products that don’t have flash based memory.

A have a cheap netbook as well and I’m happy with it, but it doesn’t compare to the new MacBook Air.

  15. The average age of the 3 Macs in use in my house is 7 years. As a new Mac comes in, the other Macs are re-purposed.

To say that the MacBook Air is disposable, compared to any Windows machine, is inviting the wrong kind of ironic humor.

  17. One of the arguments, however invalid and ridiculous, that my “PC friends” have about Macs is that they are status symbols for people that don’t know jack about computers and just want other people to think they are cool because they can afford a Mac. I don’t bother arguing with them on this because, first, it would be like having a religious debate with a zealot: it would require logic, and from that statement alone they make it clear that they have abandoned logic, and in fact might find it an affront to the “truth”. And second, it seems to be one of their MAIN arguments, and I’m not desperate for victory enough to steal that one little scrap from them. I say let them have it. I know the truth: I am happy to pay for quality, and in the end even happier to actually pay less. Microsoft Tax, and all that.
Although, I DO wish they were less expensive up front. But I wish that about everything I’ve ever bought.
