InfoWorld: Apple’s new 13-inch MacBook Air is easily the best ever

Apple Online Store“I’ve used every MacBook Air since it was originally released, and I still use an 18-month-old Air for hours and hours every day,” Paul Venezia reports for InfoWorld. “My last Air was top-of-the-line, with a dual-core 2.13GHz CPU, 2GB of RAM, and the 128GB SSD, purchased in June 2009. I purchased a top-of-the-line [13-inch] model this time as well, bearing the same dual-core 2.13GHz CPU, but now with 4GB of RAM and 256GB of flash storage ($1,799 from the Apple Store). The difference in performance between the two is significant — and that’s saying something.”

“It has the oomph to handle just about every general-purpose task you can throw at it while weighing in at less than three pounds. I’m not going to use my Air for heavy video editing with Final Cut Pro or to mix down 32 audio tracks in Pro Tools, but I’ll reach for it when it comes to all of my other daily tasks, wherever I happen to be,” Venezia reports. “One thing’s for sure: This Air is easily the best one yet.”

Yeah it would be nice if SSD chips Apple style could be easily replaceable and support the kinds of technology to prolong SS RAM life that companies like OWC uses. The new Mac Book Air is to be applauded to be the first to abandon the hard drive, easily the biggest (and most annoying) bottle neck in any computer. I replaced the hard drive in my daughter’s 2007 Mac Book with an SSD drive from OWC and man what a difference. And its not even SATA II, but just SATA! Makes an old machine faster than new one with a hard drive!

Now all we need are much higher capacity SSD cards/drives and much lower prices!

“Apparently, Apple has calculated that the number of such people is insufficient to warrant another product model.”

Maybe so but with all due respect to Apple it doesn’t always perceive things correctly. Remember when Jobs missed putting a CD burner in a Mac when we were all screaming at them in disbelief when they weren’t? Apple deserves all it’s kudos but it still makes mistakes in judgment occasionally. IMHO this is one. Maybe on a selfish note but there it is.

When I said “the more Apple products the better” I meant that in general (Macs, iPhones, iPods, iPads, etc.) not endless minute confusing iterations of inbetween models on the Mac product line like the Performas, etc. of yesteryear.

I think you would be surprised how many Mac Pro Mini-Towers they would sell if they did.

  5. @Peter Blood: “The more Apple products the better.”

I dunno man. The 68k days were a mess partly because of too many products, and partly because said products were not named in a way that made sense to most people.

  7. @ “Yep, I agree. There are many of us who have been howling at Apple for years to deliver a Half-MacPro… halfway between a Mac mini and MacPro.

Apple simply does not care about this market segment.”

–Oh, they do, they do! I’ve decided they love to torture us by – despite the near constant chorus on forums everywhere – never delivering one!!

Absolutely right. I waited ages in the hope Apple might wise-up and offer pro users a mid-range mini-tower (like they always used to), so I could replace my old G5 iMac – hooking on a pro matte monitor and with some expansion capacity for a year or two down the line. Not to be – so in the end I had to build one myself. Dead simple, great kit and about half the price… I figured if Apple were no longer interested in my custom after all these loyal years, I’ll just take my business elsewhere. Their loss, really.

  11. that’s why people have no idea what they purchase for. if you do max out for any CTO, it will be the best anyway. but for MBA, it’s totally waste money. with that money, you’d better buy macbook pro which shows you much more flexible, high performance. still pro is not heavy to carry around the town. oh, plus, you don’t have optical drive on MBA. you could say ‘why I need that?’. well, you never know. people forgot something important. this MBA can’t replace your main PC mac line. it’s more likely ipad replacement or if you need second laptop which you do very light works, then MBA is good. nothing more than that. just buy basic model. or ipad.

  13. plus, unfortunately you can’t handle heat problem from any macbook. MBA has the same issue. I tested for two hours which serious heavy test. bottom and the edge near by screen and keyboard got really hot. I couldn’t even put MBA on my lap. you think I played game? NO. it was very simple that I open few apps, and play multipul flash videos, and quick time. it felt like being exploded very soon. anyway, again MBA is not for me. it is very attractive. but gives me very low performance, small space (I need more than 500GB). I have no problem to take my macbook pro out all the time. it’s only weight 5 pounds. it’s light.

You can resist all you want and keep attaching those floppy drives and other stuff you never know when you will need. The MBA, however is the future, and some of us are willing to go there today.
I’ve been using the MBA since it was first launched. On my second one now, and moving to the 11″ model soon.
I can do most of my work on my MBA – and for the stuff I can’t, the MBP wouldn’t really be much of a contender to my 8 core MacPro. I could use the MBP for recording sessions or FCP on the road, but that is ALL… The new 11″ with it’s far superior mobility is for people who don’t like compromises: Its got all the horsepower needed for most needs, when it doesn’t, bring your MBP… or MacPro
