Analyst: OmniVision to supply camera for Apple’s second-gen FaceTime-capable iPad

“OmniVision (OVTI) will supply CMOS image sensors for a second-generation Apple (AAPL) iPad that will launch in the calendar first quarter of 2011, according to a brief research note yesterday from investment firm Detweiler Fenton,” Eric Savitz reports for Barron’s.

“The research firm contends the new iPad will ship with two cameras, a 5 MP camera and a VGA camera, and likely will support Apple’s FaceTime video chat software,” Savitz reports. “Detweiler says their early read is that Apple will build 2.5 million units of the next iPad in calendar Q1.”

  1. The new iPad will look like the iPhone 4 – flat both sides.
    (the Curve is dead)
It will have camera for facetime, no camera on back.
Slightly faster processor, better efficiency, and more RAM.
Same screen – retina display is pointless on a larger screen.
Better battery life – look for 14-16 hours.
Some new connection port, maybe USB3.

  2. There is only one reason a camera on the back side of the iPad would be unwelcome. Security. There are places you can now bring an iPad but you cannot bring your iPhone (or other camera-equiped phone) and that will change if all iPads are shipped with cameras. Especially on the back.
We will (seemingly) have cameras on the Gen 2, now I’d like to hear about the Multi-User aspect. Don’t care if they enable Fast User Switching, just the ability – the requirement? to log in before use, and to have multiple potential log-ins. Would I like a faster A4? Maybe even a dual-core? Nice … but not required for usage mainly consisting of display.

The biggest deal-breaker for me with the first-gen iPad was lack of support for multiple users.

Anyone who is married or has a family would appreciate multiple users. As-is one person’s Address Book, Calendar, Email and Photos are open to anyone who picks up the device. If you want privacy or just for things to match your personal prefs, multiple users is a must.

Some say it would curtail sales and families would just “share”.

I don’t see it that way. I would rather have multiple iPads in various rooms of the house and pick up the one near me and log-in, rather than having everyone carry their iPad with them all the time.

  6. tv also needs to adopt multiple users.

There should be one master library that contains ALL purchases made by anyone in the household. A drop down menu could display all the individual user accounts, each with libraries reflecting only their purchases, their playlists and their song/album ratings.

A guest user would allow guests to make playlists without modifying any user settings.

Needs to happen for iTunes and tv
