Apple’s new online store in China sells out of iPhone 4 units on first day

“Apple Inc’s new online Chinese-language store was a big hit with consumers Wednesday after it sold out its entire stock of iPhone 4s on the first day,” Wang Xinyuan reports for The Global Times.

“The new cyberspace-based outlet is expected to help Apple gain more smart-phone market share and counter smuggled phone sales, a market watcher said Thursday,” Xinyuan reports. “That’s not chump change as China’s resilient and fast-growing online shopping market boasted transaction value of 120 billion yuan ($17.91 billion) in the third quarter alone, said Ji Chendong, a technology consultant with Frost & Sullivan, a consulting firm.”

Xinyuan reports, “After the sellout, no new orders are being accepted. “We are out of stock for the moment,” a customer service representative with the online store told the Global Times Thursday. Apple China Spokesperson Carolyn Wu urged customers to check back with their local store or online for updates on availability.”

  1. Everyone talks about the “Tsunami”…the wave from initial introduction to selling out of stock; then waiting for backlog; then amazement at the record-setting quarterly numbers.

But (maybe a year later) there will be a second Tsunami, in iPhones and iPads. It won’t be as obvious as the “first Tsunami”, but will be massive, as all those who purchased “cheaper” hardware and tried to “get by” with “just as good” Android or WP7 phone software, finally get tired of struggling and realize that they bought a copycat POS.

In their second generation, they will go to the Apple store…in their millions.
