Apple’s billion-dollar N.C. data center could more than just double; company owns another 70 acres

Apple Online StoreJohn Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD, “Turns out Apple’s real estate investments in Maiden, N.C., extend a bit further than the parcel where the company is currently finishing up work on its data center.”

“According to Catawba County Geospatial Information Services, Apple owns a little over 70 acres across the street from the 183 acre parcel on which its 500,000-square-foot data center is being built,” Paczkowski reports. “That land was purchased in July of last year, but for what purpose?”

“The scuttlebutt around Maiden is that the company intends to use it for office space. But that seems unlikely,” Paczkowski reports. “A more plausible explanation is that this parcel, too, will be used for data center space.”

Sam Oliver reports for AppleInsider, “Late last week, it was revealed that Apple may already have plans to double the North Carolina site to 1 million square feet.”

“This week, additional evidence to support an expanded facility was revealed, as plans for the site include ‘Phase 2’ with a second, seemingly identical building,” Oliver reports. “The current 500,000-square-foot data center, expected to fully open by year’s end, is already five times larger than the company’s current data center in Newark, Calif.”

“Apple first announced the location of its secretive massive data center in July 2009,” Oliver reports. “The company has has hired staff for the $1 billion facility, but its exact purpose remains unknown.”

  1. And for “The Other Steve” above. No, this farm will work all day long. Even in the dark. The area gets it’s energy from a nuclear power plant.

You may hear, Apple is powering up! Pull the rods, power up boys. Then Steve will call Scotty and say, “Scotty, we need more power!” And Scotty will reply, “I am doing the best that I can captain!”

  2. A question to the CPU counters. As Apple builds it’s first and second BILLION DOLLAR SERVER FARMS, are you counting those computers?

As Apple fills their huge server farms, they may be manufacturing the largest number of server computers in the world. IS ANYONE COUNTING THESE? Will you also ignore Mac Xservers too! THEY ARE REAL COMPUTERS TOO!!!

  4. Does anyone know how many Xservers are installed in a BILLION DOLLAR SERVER FARM?

If one quarter of the BILLION is the Xsereves and lest guess they cost Apple $2,500 to make. Isn’t that another 100,000 Xservers? Where they counted in this year’s global computer statistics?

These idiots have know idea how many Macs were made by Apple this year. The talking heads are told how many Macs Apple sold not how many were made! Again, CLUELESS!
