“According to Catawba County Geospatial Information Services, Apple owns a little over 70 acres across the street from the 183 acre parcel on which its 500,000-square-foot data center is being built,” Paczkowski reports. “That land was purchased in July of last year, but for what purpose?”
“The scuttlebutt around Maiden is that the company intends to use it for office space. But that seems unlikely,” Paczkowski reports. “A more plausible explanation is that this parcel, too, will be used for data center space.”

Sam Oliver reports for AppleInsider, “Late last week, it was revealed that Apple may already have plans to double the North Carolina site to 1 million square feet.”
“This week, additional evidence to support an expanded facility was revealed, as plans for the site include ‘Phase 2’ with a second, seemingly identical building,” Oliver reports. “The current 500,000-square-foot data center, expected to fully open by year’s end, is already five times larger than the company’s current data center in Newark, Calif.”
“Apple first announced the location of its secretive massive data center in July 2009,” Oliver reports. “The company has has hired staff for the $1 billion facility, but its exact purpose remains unknown.”

The real question is not acreage or square footage. It is what level of connectivity do they currently have installed, and what is planned for the future.
Hopefully it is at least four OC-48’s — each running in a different physical direction (no back hoe events!). This would give, at peak, a million concurrent users better than 9 Mbps downlink rate.
I also hope they have plans in place to upgrade those to at least four OC-192’s at some time in the not too distant future giving 5 million concurrent users a peak rate of about 8 Mbps.
This number of concurrent users is quite possible for Apple going forward. Additionally, these streaming rates would make for some interesting applications.

Shadowself made an excellent point … redundancy! Not just two-way, but four-way! Of course, it all gets funneled into the same system at some point. Still, you can do your best to insure that point is well off your own property.

And that is just on a single level! When DEC was building all over Eastern Mass, the standard was three or four levels – one under-ground. After 9/11, I’d expect Apple to build some of the data center in the protected area below the surface.

I find hard to believe they are going to build everything in the same location. They should have a backup plan. They can not rely so much in just one city.

The problem with this speculation is that no one knows if the original building supports all the servers originally planned, or if it’s half, and a new building will house the other half. This has been speculated upon too. Unless Apple says, one way or the other, all this is just guessing.
