MacBook Air: ‘There’s never been a screen like this’

Apple Online StoreJason D. O’Grady reports for ZDNet, “Almost immediately after Apple launched the new MacBook Air, TechRestore began offering a matte finish screen replacement for its glossy screen.”

“CEO Shannon Jean told me that that they’re using the same panel that Apple does. Apparently there’s only one panel like it being made right now,” O’Grady reports. “I also asked if it was any easier to get inside MBA now that there’s no microphone in the display: ‘It’s much more difficult. The screen is paper thin and it’s not inside a housing like the traditional screens. It’s in layers, it’s insane… I don’t think there’s ever been a screen like this used in a laptop.’

    > First of all, their is NO medical evidence that glossy screens are harmful as some contend.

Of course not; remember CRT displays? The best ones had perfectly flat screens. And the surface was not only “glossy,” they were glass… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

The matte finish on LCD screen originated when pixels were really large and monochrome. Whereas equivalent CRT displays were naturally a bit fuzzy, those old LCDs needed the matte finish to “soften” the pixelation effect. Also, they were much dimmer with less contrast on colors, so reflections would have been a larger problem.

Today, pixels are microscopic and the LED backlighting used on current Macs is very bright; they are as bright as the old high-end CRTs with those flat “glassy” displays.

I was also strongly against glossy screens until I had a chance to see side-by-side comparisons. Glare or no glare, Apple’s glossy screens are the sharpest, brightest, most beautiful displays I have ever laid eyes on.
