Jason D. O’Grady reports for ZDNet, “Almost immediately after Apple launched the new MacBook Air, TechRestore began offering a matte finish screen replacement for its glossy screen.”
“CEO Shannon Jean told me that that they’re using the same panel that Apple does. Apparently there’s only one panel like it being made right now,” O’Grady reports. “I also asked if it was any easier to get inside MBA now that there’s no microphone in the display: ‘It’s much more difficult. The screen is paper thin and it’s not inside a housing like the traditional screens. It’s in layers, it’s insane… I don’t think there’s ever been a screen like this used in a laptop.’

Oh boy, “…there’s ever been a screen…” Somebody didn’t proofread…

Fixed.

Amazingly, though, this display, even though it is (almost literally) paper-thin, it is just incredibly robust. I tried bending and twisting the thing the other day in the store. It feels like it is cast from steel (or kevlar, or carbon fibre). It just won’t yield to bending or flexing. Just remarkable!

Is this good or bad? I am not clear why everyone is so excited. It is definitely the coolest in it’s class, and maybe the lightest, but it is not the fastest nor does it have the longest battery life. It is however about the only one without a card reader in the 11 inch model.

Apple continues to lead the pack with true innovation. They simply don’t know how to stand still.

@Predrag,
Is it liquid metal?
I’ve been wondering about this, but haven’t seen anything mentioning it and thought Apple would’ve promoted this if it was, but maybe they just wanted to put it out there and make people wonder about it.

Yes, I would buy MBA if Apple offered matte screen on it

Just got back from the Apple Store. Remarkable.
I have a wonderful iPad, and for the most part, I don’t really need a laptop. . . . But I think I need one of these!

Apple and their god forsaken cheap, eye strain, headache causing glossy screens now are impossible to send off and get replaced with a nice, crisp, easy on the eyes, can use just about anywhere anti-glare screen you can get from just about any other PC maker.
Oh sure, you can get a anti-glare screen on the 15 and 17″ MacBook Pro’s for more money, but that’s just about it.
If you use a computer for hours on end, like working for instance, your going to want a anti-glare screen, trust me. If your not having eye trouble now with glossy screens, you will be later on with repeated use.
I’m a old CRT veteran, so I know. Glare is the number one problem with computers and you can’t use the computer if your seeing your face in it all the time, or the overhead lights, or the morons walking behind you.
The third party anti-glare films have to be replaced regularly as they peal, yellow and get dirt all around the edges. What a ugly hassle for such a expensive machine from Apple.
My $290 Ubuntu HP netbook, it has a anti-glare screen, my 2004 MacBook Pro, it has a matte screen.
Have to marry a ugly ass PC monitor to my Mac Pro, because of Apple.
I’m getting tired of their limited hardware crap.

Come on Apple! Get it together. You’ve traditionally produced products of excellence – best in class etc. Please stop going the way of gloss vs quality. I’m referring to more than screens too!

Don’t CRY, complain to Apple with your WALLET and TELL them.
Instead of spending $900 on an Apple Hobby Edition Glossy Display™, I bought a 26″ ViewSonic Pro Series display for $600+ from Amazon. THEN I wrote Apple a letter and told them so.
Did it do any good? Who knows.
I DO know that I WILL NOT spend MY money on a glossy monitor.
I also paid the extra $150 for the hi-res/anti-glare screen for my 15″ i7 McBook Pro. Actually, I prefer the stock lower-res display, but I will not have a glossy monitor!

Yeah it’s a shame I really need as much power as I can get, for CAD hence I’m getting the MBP 17″ with SSD and the fastest CPU, otherwise I’d be so tempted.
