“According to a Data Center Knowledge report published Sunday, the data center is ‘fully operational,’ with Apple beginning to ‘ramp up production’ at the server farm,” Ong reports. “The Cupertino, Calif., company could be planning to build a second facility on the site, the report notes.”
Ong reports, “Though the exact purpose of the massive server farm remains unknown, analysts speculate that it will play a central role in Apple’s move toward cloud computing and streaming media. Apple’s new $99 Apple TV, with just 8GB of on-board storage, is built for streaming. Additionally, the recently released MacBook Air, which Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs called the “future” of the entire MacBook line, is equipped with only flash memory. With the entry-level 11.6-inch model sporting just 64GB of flash storage, the ultra-thin notebook line would greatly benefit from cloud-based initiatives.”

Every movie and TV show produced and rendered in 720HD would fill only about a dozen cabinets. It must be something much larger.
May be a push into enterprise services like Amazon S3, or Search like Google or massive storage for MobileMe. Social Networking seems unlikely since they are integrating existing products with other Social Networks. Most likely is a move into mobile audio and video telephony like Skype.
Then again it may be just future capacity planning.

We had lost a Data Center (among other “things”) in 9/11 and the question was how to prevent another “local” disaster from crippling the company. (Then the question became “how can we do this without spending so much MONEY”)
If Apple is wise, they will not hyper-focus the Data Center on one task, but assign a primary task (cloud storage?) plus secondary and tertiary tasks – one of which would be instant-on recovery. True, things would slow significantly … but they would continue, even if at the slower pace.

is it possible apple could offer it’s own internet, wifi, cell service or something like that. they make great products and other companies making a fortune off them with their service. wouldn’t apple like to be the ones keeping all that money, instead of att, verizon & others?

@Rick: It’s called WiMax and it’s available now from Clear (Clearwire) in many areas. Clearwire has partnered with Sprint and others to provide them their 4G coverage.
