Droid Doesn’t: As Verizon lags, AT&T catches up on strength of Apple iPhone 4

InvisibleSHIELD. Scratch Proof your iPhone 4!“Verizon today reported slower growth than usual in a sign that Android’s effect was muted at the carrier,” Electronista reports.

“It added a modest 997,000 cellphone customers during the summer compared to AT&T’s 2.6 million and was enough to put the two carriers’ total bases nearly even, with Verizon just holding a lead at 93.2 million phone users versus AT&T’s 92.8 million,” Electronista reports. “Verizon’s main advantage was lower turnover of old subscription customers for new, at 1.07 percent.”

“The growth was relatively low in spite of some of the highest-profile Android releases of the year coming to the network,” Electronista reports. “The provider may turn this around as it has recently become much closer to Apple, striking a deal for iPads in Verizon stores and with a probable deal for a CDMA iPhone 4 early next year.”

MacDailyNews Note: And now, in this quarter, Verizon’s market is somewhat frozen as knowledgeable customers await iPhone after a slew of credible reports indicating its imminence. After all, why would Verizon Wireless customers settle for a fake iPhone when they can likely get the real thing in less than 90 days? The good news for Verizon is that it’s always darkest before the dawn.

  1. Some of you are going to keep waiting and waiting and waiting….

Nothing is set in stone. Rumors are rumors. I’m sure if apple won’t release it for sale in January, but just an anouncement if anything. Or maybe even at the “road map to 5.0 event” around late April early may. You will see new iPad news before any new iPhone news. Apple is now on yearly time table. Look at their FY. Q1 iPad Q2 iPhone Q3 iPods Q4 take your pick Mac. Mac refreshes can anytime of the year.

  3. And Verizon only propped up their lead by buying Alltel’s customer base a couple years ago, masking how AT&T has been beating Verizon on customer additions.

I looked at a chart on BusinessInsider and in the last 2 years, AT&T has added 1M more customers than Verizon in iPhone launch quarters 3 and 4. In Qs 1 and 2, AT&T only adds about 180k more customers than Verizon. Seems correlated to the iPhone launches.

  5. @ Dave,

    Dave’s not here man!

“I am waiting for VZ so I can switch from ATT. Making call from SF to NYC is like using tin cans and a string.”

Dave, you’re full of shit. You are just trying to freeze AT&T the way Apple has frozen Verizon with their leaks. Calls between SF and NYC do not go over the airwaves, they use optical cables just like land lines do.

Dropping calls is one thing, saying you can’t call NYC from SF is pure bullshit. Even if you have cell phones at both ends of the call and both cell phones are on AT&T you can still call NYC from SF.

Have you ever called NYC from SF?

  7. So Apple and the iPhone will put AT&T in the lead over Verizon in the very last quarter of its U.S. carrier exclusivity. And, then, Verizon takes the lead back during the next quarter as it begins selling millions of iPhones. You couldn’t have scripted it any better.

  9. When Verizon gets the iPhone I wonder if their network will get crushed by the data usage.
ATT is good for data and mediocre for voice many people say.
    The future is data however.

  11. It’s all about service, service, service. I’ve been a loyal Verizon customer for decades and have hung on each Verizon/iPhone rumor with great hope over the years. This round of rumors seem the most credible by far. And unfortunately I got an ATT iPad before the Verizon/iPad announcement. All I can say is that now I personally have had the opportunity to deal with ATT customer “service” and can make a real time comparison. Verizon is to Apple what ATT is to Windows.

Verizon customer support is not just far better, but is much closer to an Apple tech support experience. Verizon’s people and their mindset are a far better match for Apple and the level of educated true concern we Apple users are accustomed to. It was interesting talking with Verizon the day they got the iPad. Their front line staff knew nothing until they walked into work the day of Apple’s announcement. And of the couple techs I spoke with they were ecstatic! From what I was told and could genuinely feel, Verizon staff REALLY want the iPhone as badly as we want them to have it too. And Steve willing, they will soon, as will I.
