“Steve Jobs says the MacBook Air is the future of the MacBook and the future of the notebook as well,” John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD. “But if that’s to be the case, the machine — and Apple’s ecosystem — needs to evolve a bit more to appeal to that strata of user tethered to the high capacity hard drives that the Air has summarily dispatched.”
“This being Apple we’re talking about, that evolution is likely already well underway and perhaps — perhaps — being engineered at the company’s massive new North Carolina data center,” Paczkowski reports. “With its 500,000 square feet of data center space (currently, sources tell me that Apple is considering doubling that) that facility has been built for something. And what better use to put it to than the cloud services that might completely eliminate the need for high capacity hard drives and give the Air storage to match its performance characteristics.”

‘Data center’ might not be an adequate description of this NC facility.
Maybe it will be for processing, too, like such as chickens.

every one says clouds are the way of the future, but they are infact the way of the past. the original apple computer was so popular because you did not have to connect to some big computer (a cloud) at some big college (a datacenter) but you had a computer on your desk.
no this is not some storage facility, it will be used for world wide area bonjour,
you’l be able to open up safari and have a searchable list of all computers that are connected to the internet (who are not behind nat) along with all mac powered web servers.
think about it, would they do something revolutionary like that, or start copying what google is doing with chrome os, where you have to re-download a program or document every time you want to work on it.

Aha, a 2 Billion dollar server farm. That leaves 49 Billion left for chicken feed.

@Stephen – And there you have it. Stand alone computing vs thin clients. I vote for independence from the cloud, with services as needed, ie software distribution and reference, but not my data files and ability to do work. Perhaps remote, off line back up.

Anybody remember of Google Chromium OS? Yes there was a buzz. This thing is now vanishing in the haze. Google then decided to leave it and make Android OS for phones after Apple showed the way to run phone business. Google tried to figure out what actually the cloud is and how to make money out of it. They could not make it. Once apple showed them the way, they will just copycat it. Google is a real new Microsoft. The problem with Microsoft is Ballmer cannot copy fast enough, Bill Gate could, but not Ballmer.
