“Steve Jobs has a penchant for ruthlessly killing off old technology,” Buster Heine writes for Cult of Mac.
Advertisement: MacBook Air. Available in two utlracompact sizes. Starting at just $999. Fast, free shipping from the Apple Online Store.
Henie writes, “Throughout his career, Jobs has been celebrated for ditching dying technologies in favor of new: the command line (first Mac), the Floppy Disk (first iMac), SCSI drives, serial ports, dial-up modems, and FireWire on hard drives and iPods. With Apple’s event yesterday Steve Jobs, went on a killing spree.”
Here’s eight technologies he gave the kiss of death to:
• Hard Drives
• Shrink-Wrap Software
• MacBook Pro (don’t worry, it’ll just evolve by appropriating MacBook Air tech – MDN Ed.)
• Online Software Portals
• DVD Install Disks
• The iSight Camera (just a name change, now it’s the “The FaceTime Camera”)
• iChat
• Mouse Buttons
• Adobe Flash – “Oh wait, Steve killed that already,” Heine writes.
Read about each of the eight points above in the full article here.

Out with Flash, in with flash.

My only disappointment yesterday was seeing the new MBA being limited to 4 gigs of RAM. That’s why I believe there’s room in the product lineup for something more. And the Core 2, nice of a CPU that it is, is not a bleeding edge screamer, but one that makes fairly modest demands on a battery. That said, I am smitten by the MBA, and it points to what’s to come.
My next question: what’s to come of iWeb?

The MacBook Pro. Their best selling Macs, get real. SJ said that the app store would not be the only way to sell software. The Magic Mouse and their trackpads have buttons, just because you can’t see something does not mean it is not there; like air.

All I want is the MacBook Pro 13″ with DVD and HDD removed and add SSD. Leave everything else as is. Make it 4 pounds with huge battery.

Sounds more like the “Kiss of Death” for Apple.
Most people like:
– Hard Drives
– Actual physical software discs
– REAL macbooks
-and yes, Flash.
Jobs is getting greedy and Apple will not be the darling it is now for too much longer.
Google or Microsoft or Adobe should re-play the “1984” commercial with the added vocal at the end “Who Knew?? They weren’t fighting Big Brother, they were aspiring to be Big Brother”

From the story:
“DVD Install Disks – Every new MacBook Air comes with a read-only OS X and iLife memory stick — not an old-fashioned DVD or CD. The new memory stick can not be reformatted, erased, or reused. With the addition of a centralized app store, the USB install drive is the only thing users need to get started with their Mac.”
“Uncle Joe” Jobs has embraced the Windows philosophy of no reinstalls.
Might as well buy a Windows box; just as restrictive, but far cheaper.

And an OS DVD can be reformatted, erased, or reused? They’ve given you a simple way to load the OS and not have to pop for the external SuperDrive and you’re whining? Floppies all over again. Maybe you should buy a Windows box.

Jim – you don’t think Google and Microsoft will jump right on the More Clouds bandwagon like theyve been shooting for? there’s still a browser that opens to a world of things. Apple just showed Google and Linux how it’s done. While the world is starting to see the browser as the future OS like Google wanted, Jobs is trying to show there’re still lots of ways to innovate the desktop.

MBA is not intended to be a mobil Studio… But a mobile Office. There are tools for each job to be performed. IMO
