Even before MacBook Air, Western Digital warns of Apple hit due to iPad

Apple Online Store“Western Digital Corp. sought to reassure investors about the slowing hard-drive business on Tuesday, as the advent of tablet computers eats into computer demand,” Alex Dobuzinskis reports for Reuters.

“The company, which is struggling with waning consumer sentiment, also projected sales below Wall Street’s estimates during the normally strong holiday quarter,” Dobuzinskis reports. “Chief Executive John Coyne said tablets such as Apple’s iPad — which use flash memory rather than hard-drive storage — will reduce growth in shipments of low-end laptops and netbooks by 10 to 20 percent over the next few quarters.”

  1. You have to love this stuff.

“Apple’s iPad … will reduce growth in shipments of low-end laptops and netbooks by 10 to 20 percent over the next few quarters”.

    HOW CAN THIS BE?
    • the iPad is not a computer RIGHT?
    • the iPad is a niche device RIGHT?
    • the iPad is not meeting the talking heads expectations RIGHT?

  3. Absolutely an incorrect question to ask, ab initio. The iPad is all of these and more, for now, and will become one indelibly ingrained in everyone’s head in three years. The iPads will be the eponymous equal to the “PC” has been for the past 25 years or so. It will be like Hoover is today, or worse yet, Xerox!!!

  5. I like Western Digital hard drives, they’ve been good to Mac users.
As a photographer, hard drive space (lots and lots of it) is very important to me. Flash memory still has a long way to go in terms of price and storage space.

    At least it’s still growth.

  7. Photographers, and others, will still need cheap digital storage, but I suppose we have to concede that our requirements are not mass-market. At least we don’t have to suffer Zips discs, Syquests and MO-optical discs, which promised everything and gave you nothing but grief, with that SCSI interface!! If I could get back the months of my life wasted on trying to solve SCSI conflicts… I’d only be 29 now. Let’s not even mention Jaz drives right now…. I still shudder when it recall the magazine layout that just disappeared in a scratchy sound…
