“He says sources believe the new model will only come with a solid-state drive, with no HDD option like in the 13.3-inch version of the slim notebook,” Savitz reports. “Amir also said that SanDisk (SNDK) and Samsung will provide SSDs for the product, with 64-128 GB of storage, with a cost to Apple of $100-$200.”
Savitz reports, “He thinks SanDisk could sell 700,000-900,000 units to Apple in 2011.”

We’re seeing part of Apple’s game plan to create separation between the 11.6″ Air and netbooks (as if the fact that it runs OS X won’t be enough).
Either way, I can see the tech journalists claiming it’s just an uber expensive netbook. They’ll compare it to the Asus Eee or whatever that’s like $300 less and claim it’s due to the mythical “Apple tax.”

As people get used to the much faster response of SSD devices like iPad and the new MBA with low lag latency, they’ll expect the same in their Mac Book Pros. I just put an OWC SSD drive in my daughters old 2007 Mac Book and boy, what an improvement! And the bus is only original SATA and not SATA II and it’s a 2.16 Ghz Duo chip.
From a cold boot into Safari takes 30 seconds. Photoshop launches in seconds, etc.. I can only imagine a more current quad processor and SATA III. These things can’t come down in price soon enough. I want a 480Gb SSD drive for my Mac Pro but they’re still around $1600!

You got it all wrong. They’ll be comparing it to the $500 iPad any saying something from Apple that costs twice as much as an iPad is still a toy.

I think SSD would make them more durable, less moving parts to break. A good test would be to see a MBA and netbook dropped from the top of a table, bar, and room. Some Jackass type test would be fun too.

Funny how I get so much done and with so much pleasure on my Apple “toys.” (Beats suffering on “non-toy” clueless third world crapola from Microsoft.). Toys now take on a whole new meaning! The new toy = pleasure + productivity plus!

My prediction… within two to three years (about the same time we get to whatever comes AFTER Mac OS X 10.7 Lion), the only Mac with an optical drive option will be the Mac Pro, and it will be “optional” there. For SSD, there are already options for SSD storage across the high-end of the Mac product line, so SSD will probably become the “standard” by that same time, with hard drives relegated to the low end and mass storage additional drives for the Mac Pro. And what’s this “floppy drive”?
