10 reasons why Verizon iPhones and iPads are very bad news for Google and Android

Apple Online Store“Apple and Verizon have finally partnered up. The hardware maker will be offering its tablet to Verizon Wireless customers starting in a couple weeks,” Don Reisinger writes for eWeek. “When that happens, the debate over when Apple would finally start its growth strategy in the United States will be over. And then, the debate will turn to how the company will use its Verizon partnership to its advantage… Apple and Verizon working together is not good news for Google or its Android mobile operating system.”

Here’s why Google should be so concerned about an Apple, Verizon partnership:

1. Android OS is the central Verizon player
2. Verizon’s focus on Android will be off
3. Steve Jobs will greatly influence Verizon
4. If the iPad sells well, Verizon will be off and running

MacDailyNews Take: “If?” More like “when.”

5. iPad at Verizon stores (announced yesterday) alone could hurt Android OS and Android-based devices
6. Apple will effectively will double its U.S. market; Google’s former advantage of ubiquity will be gone
7. Google used to capitalize on AT&T
8. How will Android tablets compete with iPads that run on Verizon’s 3G network with a MiFi hotspot, as well as on AT&T’s 3G network
9. The vendors can’t match Apple: Future Android-based products need to find ways to look better than Apple products. Previously, it didn’t matter all that much, since consumers couldn’t compare. But now they can. And that’s a major problem.
10. Unfortunately for Google, there is really nothing that it can do to stop the Apple-Verizon partnership from happening. Once the iPhone arrives on Verizon’s store shelves, Apple will be able to turn up the competitive heat on Google Android. That doesn’t bode well for Android’s future sales growth.

MacDailyNews Take: As we’ve said all along, there is no reason for Verizon Wireless customers to settle for a fake iPhone or iPad when the real iPhone and iPad are available. Resinger’s reasons 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, and 10 all speak to that point. 4, 5, and 8 highlight how iPad’s lead in quality, ecosystem, and availability further dim Android’s future; all before a single judgement on patent infringement has even been handed down. This is going to be awesome to witness.

  1. I think this is somewhat overblown

You have always been able to use the IPAD with Verizon’s MIFI. This bundle is only somewhat attractive because of the no contract, but Verizon is charging a premium for the MIFI hardware when bundled. Outside of the bundling, the MIFI can be had from Verizon at $19 and $50 for a 2 yr and 1 yr contract respectively.

This is more akin to Walmart or BestBuy selling the ipad….it is just another retail outlet — which is good, but I am skeptical as to its direct impact on the smartphone and the “here to fore phantom” Android tablet sector unless it starts running natively on Verizon network.

  3. Umm, before we blow this molehill into a mountain of BS – what they are offering is nothing that has not been available since the release of the iPad. They are selling you an iPad wifi only with a Verizon MiFi mobile wifi hotspot bundled with it, together with a rather expensive data plan (from what I can tell).

All of which was available from day 1 when you got your iPad… Nothing new except the bundle. They are not offering a 3G version that is compatible with Verizon… THAT would be something interesting, and would hint and something special. AIN’T GOING TO HAPPEN.

    move along folks…

  5. Getting the ipad is a good way for Verizon to test out its network and get some idea of the loads it will need to handle with the iPhone. Particularly, it will give Verizon a good idea of where the people most disposed to get Verizon iPhones are concentrated.

I can’t count the number of people that have shown interest in my iPad and then asked, “But you’re stuck with AT&T for 3G?” My reply is always, “This is the wifi version only. There was no way I was going to waste the time or money sticking something else on AT&T’s network.” Which is the truth.

So when the first set of adds comes out the Verizon iPhone, what will the ad music be–Handel’s hallelujah or the Ode to Joy from Beethoven’s 9th? I’m thinking film of a beaming iPhone with a Verizon logo and Hallelujah blasting pretty much takes care of it.

  7. “…So when the first set of ads comes out for the Verizon iPhone…”

A Droid rises from a machine, is zapped by lightening and replaced by an iPhone as the Star Wars title theme plays in the background…

  9. Steve516,

Wrong. Verizon is carrying iPads in over 2,000 Verizon Wireless Stores nationwide beginning October 28th.

It is a major deal that will dramatically and negatively impact Google’s tablet OS aspirations.
