“The online scuttlebutt says iLife 2011 is coming very soon, dropping iDVD and adding a new app,” Dennis Sellers writes for Macsimum News. “I think that’s about right, and I think that new app may be a hybrid of FaceTime and iChat. (FaceChat? iTime? Naw, Apple will probably just call it FaceTime.)”
“Right now FaceTime only works iPhone 4/iPod touch to iPhone 4/iPod touch. However, since all Macs but the Mac mini and Mac Pro have built-in iSight cameras (though, obviously, webcams can be attached), it only makes sense to extend FaceTime to our favorite computing platform,” Sellers writes. “All Macs come with iChat, so it might make sense to merge iChat and FaceTime into one app.”
Sellers writes, “That should move lots of extra Macs. But Apple is offering FaceTime as an open standard, so the company is doubtless figuring Windows systems into the equation at some point in the future.”

Sometimes you hear a term commonly used, and you wonder, I’d like to know the etymology of the term “scuttlebutt”. Obviously something to do with a barrel of water on a ship, as that is what a “butt” is on a ship.
Okay, I looked:
Water for immediate consumption on a sailing ship was conventionally stored in a scuttled butt: A butt (cask) which had been scuttled by making a hole in it so the water could be withdrawn. Since sailors exchanged gossip when they gathered at the scuttlebutt for a drink of water, scuttlebutt became Navy slang for gossip or rumours.[2]
Apparently, it’s the same as trading office gossip over the water cooler. But “scuttlebutt” sounds so much better.
iChat already supports H.264 video calling and video conferencing for you and three others. Its not a real stretch to add FaceTime support — in fact, I’ll bet FaceTime was based on iChat video conferencing to begin with.

I thought we already have this – skype video chat – a superb communications tool.

Nope. Integrated into OS10.7 though. iChat–> Facetime

At most, maybe a new version of iChat will be released alongside the new iLife, but I really can’t see it being folded into the suite. iLife is all about media manipulation (consumption and production) and subsequent transmission, whereas iChat/FaceTime is about communicating directly and in real time with another party. I don’t think the two activities will be folded into a single suite.

Apple is in the business of using features to sell hardware and software. I could easily see apple either a) bundling to the sale of new macs b) bundling it to a new version of iLife (and make it not run on a mac more than 2 years old) or c) making facetime a separate software purchase.

Two Thumbs Up for FaceTime! It works exceptionally well with greet video and audio …. Only hope it comes to iChat or the desktop.

FaceTime would need to merge with iChat to be considered a program and not just a feature.
iDVD merges with iMovie
iWeb gets overhauled to be based on HTML5
What else could be added to iPhoto besides getting Faces to actually work well?

Why does it have to be either or.
Couldn’t Apple simply add FaceTime compatibility and features to iChat?
Or release a Mac OS version of FaceTime with hooks to the Address Book database?
I also read somewhere that iDVD is expected to be folded into iMovie.
