Apple-haters latch onto latest iPhone myth: Glassgate

InvisibleSHIELD. Scratch Proof your iPhone 4!“Post ‘antenna-gate’, Apple-haters have a new myth. This morning’s anti-iPhone info-blip sees claims that the ‘iPhone 4 breaks 82 percent more than iPhone 3Gs. Which sounds like quite a headline — particularly given the mind-share wars between Apple and Android — except it isn’t strictly true,” Jonny Evans reports for Computerworld. “These claims are based on data from a firm called SquareTrade and is based on claimed analysis of 20,000 iPhone warranty customers. But this is a storm in a teacup — though likely to attract the usual critics.”

“SquareTrade analyzed iPhone accidents for more than 20,000 iPhone 4s covered by one of its plans and found an 82 percent jump in reports of broken screens in the device’s first four months, compared to the first four months after the iPhone 3Gs release,” Evans reports. “Described as ’82 percent’ of course this sounds like a big deal, but in reality it means 3.9 percent of 20,000 iPhone 4 owners reported a cracked screen rather than 2.1 percent of 20,000 iPhone 3GS owners.”

Evans reports, “Before rolling with these figures, do consider the fact that the iPhone 4 has glass on the back as well as the front of the product, while the iPhone 3GS carried it only on the front of the device. It would be easy to conjecture that Apple should be seeing cracked screens twice as often with the iPhone 4 than with the iPhone 3GS. /it isn’t. This makes for a small testament to the strength of the aluminosilicate Gorilla glass used in the new iPhone.”

MacDailyNews Take: After what our iPhone 4’s have gone through (dropped down stadium stairs, stepped on during an under-12 soccer game, tumbled onto a train platform, etc.) without being any worse for the wear, we can’t imagine (short of driving over it with a truck) what it would take to actually break an iPhone 4’s Gorilla Glass.

  1. Dropped mine onto a stone tile floor. Landed almost flat, and shattered the back panel. (I had the bumper off, and it was outside of the normal carry case.) It still worked perfectly, including the camera, but I was happier after it got replaced at the Apple Store.

As for the second poster, I call BS on plastic being more scratch-resistant than Gorilla glass.

  3. I am so tired of hearing about broken cellphones, iPhones, etc. People keep them in their pockets with keys, money, etc.; in shirt pockets where they fall out when you bend over, etc. etc. This is an electronic device that is not as sturdy as a rock. Be careful — put it in a case.

  5. The religious fervor that surrounds Apple is amazing. This Computerworld columnist is a perfect example. He feels compelled to shout down every article that is even remotely critical of Apple, or which suggests the company and its products are less than perfect.

The iPhone 4 was rushed out the door and has a few problems, and dismissing them as “myths” is not the solution.

  7. It’s a handheld computer. I wouldn’t drop my Macbook Pro or throw keys in the case with it when traveling. I treat it with respect, because it is expensive and amazing technology. Anyone that does less with an iPhone is just asking for trouble, with any handheld computer really. The iPhone 4 is the BEST phone/computer I’ve ever had, and because I want it to last, though it is by no means fragile, I handle with care.

  9. You don’t even need a case. You just have to use common sense and care and not be a clumsy oaf. I’ve had every iPhone since the first one, never use a case and never cracked any of them. Probably in large part due to taking care to keep my fingers closed around the device while using it. Yes, if you open your palm flat it will slip out, and a certain amount of the time, upon crashing into a hard surface it will then break. The question though is not what kind of glass did they use, or shouldn’t they have used plastic. The question is why did you open your hand allowing your $600 computer to slip out of it. Get a grip people! Literally.

  11. @Fredo woah woah there cupcake. I was just saying what happened. Yes sometimes it’s in with keys/change as all three first day bought previous models were. I have to say though the front glass on the iPhone 4 picks up way more scratches than all 3 previous models.
