“Apple’s FaceTime didn’t launch as a killer app, but it may end up as one as the company broadens its distribution and floods the market with more devices supporting it. And, according to Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes, Apple is well on its way to achieving exactly that,” John Paczkowsk reports for AllThingsD.
“Don’t underestimate FaceTime, Reitzes said in a note to clients today that suggests we’re at the beginnings of a FaceTime networking effect that will goose sales across many of Apple’s product lines, particularly if Apple adds support for the video conferencing feature to iPads and Macs, which seems likely,” Paczkowsk reports.
Paczkowsk reports, “Reitzes figures Apple will have sold some 63 million FaceTime devices by the end of fiscal 2011–40 million FaceTime-compatible iPhones, 15 million FaceTime-compatible iPods, and 8 million FaceTime-compatible iPads. And he says that number will more than double the following year.”

Can someone explain to me what effects a goose has on sales?

Yes, it did launch as a killer app. You just had to be paying attention. The cell phone industry died that day. They are now just pipe providers, as they’ll soon recognize. Ubiquitous WiFi would end even that role.

Poor competitors. Apple’s now fully leveraging their ability to control hardware and software design. Life inside the walled garden has never been better, and it has always been better.

DUH! I guess all it takes to be an analyst is the ability to state the obvious.

@Sarasota
I have children away at college and seeing them can tell me a lot more about how they are doing. I also have salesmen in the field who could show me problems with equipment live while I try to help them trouble shoot. I am sure there are many other uses we haven’t even thought of yet. Use your imagination.

@Sarasota, your lack of social contacts aside, human face to face communication has been the “Holy Grail” since the dawn of the electronic age.
Dick Tracy watch anyone?

Looks like common-sense speculation based on stuff we already know or suspect. Nothing that indicates any insider knowledge.

Although I agree with Raitzes’ conclusion, his assertion that Apple will have only sold 8 million iPads by Sep 30, 2011 is laughable. They’ve probably sold that many already!
