RUMOR: Apple’s iPhone for Verizon to feature dual GSM/CDMA chip, no LTE iPhone until 2012

InvisibleSHIELD. Scratch Proof your iPhone 4!“The iPhone CDMA model due in January won’t support LTE. But here’s where it gets really interesting: sources tell me that the iPhone refresh in mid-2011 won’t support LTE either. Instead, Apple will produce a dual mode iPhone containing 3G flavors of GSM and CDMA, which operates on all carriers worldwide. If this holds true, Apple won’t support the LTE standard until some time in 2012,” Steve Cheney reports for TechCrunch.

“As we cut through the hype on LTE, I believe Apple’s decision to wait may be the right one,” Cheney reports. “While the carriers are promising LTE as an upgrade path that will drive new applications and higher speeds, the reality is that 4G deployments will take much longer than the carriers are letting on.”

Cheney reports, “Apple doesn’t want to mess with the first generation of LTE chipsets, since they will be bulky and power hungry. Instead, Apple will make a unified model that works across 3G networks on all carriers, and innovate with incredible new features like NFC which mirror what they accomplished with FaceTime on iPhone 4. Apple simply doesn’t want to be the guinea pig on new LTE networks that aren’t ready for primetime, and Steve Jobs knows not to trust the hype that’s spewed by the carriers on 4G. The truth is that 3G networks have many more years of life, and the transition to LTE will be much slower than the carriers want you to believe.”

  1. @ R2–

Since when does Apple look for success elsewhere before entering any market in any capacity?

    Oh wait… They don’t.

Apple doesn’t need another company to do anything right first. If anything, the fact that no one else has done it right yet proves that Apple has an opportunity to corner yet another market.

  2. I’ve been saying this for awhile now. Even with LTE Verizon will not be able to do both voice and data. LTE WILL BE DATA ONLY FOR VERIZON. AT&T is still going to be dual task Voice/Data because their fallback (3G, HSDPA+,HSUPA+) still allows for such task.

This radio chip these analyst keep talking about has been out for quite some time now, but it is known in the world not to be very efficient. And basically to point is this article is recycled garbage from years past.

I’m sure these analyst will just cover all grounds so that when/IF any announcement is made they can pull this or that article out.

As I stated also before, until you start to see other websites or our beloved Verizon loving MDN start to post mystery devices making visit to their website don’t believe the hype thats been around since 2007.

  4. @djp

That cracked me up! So true.
It will eventually, but I’ll stick with AT&T.
Played with my first android phone last night. Now I see why verizon and everyone else wants the iPhone on thier network.
“I’m just used to having to do the extra steps”. The android users words after I saw her open and read a text… Close the app, close the app again with another app that kills the process, and then lock her phone.
And she knows more about her android phone then verizon tech support does, that’s just sad cause she’s not a power user.

  6. That would be a marketing mistake!

The lack of 4G networks in the wild haven’t stopped other carriers from selling 4G devises now! I already have a 4G Sprint Overdrive from my computer (and future iPad) even though there is no 4G yet.

People don’t want to be told, “Buy our old technology, “when the networks come, you can just buy another iPhone then.”

  8. I don’t care about CDMA and will never buy dual phone. If rumor is true I’ll be sticking to iP4 for some time. Instead of NFC why Apple doesn’t fix BT first? LTE is not ready for mass market, it makes sense for Apple to wait. If Apple makes VZ phone at least ATT network may get less overloaded. But I am not going to pay for dual phone which I don’t use.

  10. Apple, regardless of Verizon wanting to glom on their software crap will release a ‘world’ phone and just sell it through their other providers if Verizon refuses to Apple’s terms. If they don’t do it up front then when a new customer walks into a Verizon store and wants to activate it they’ll get the hint.

  14. @TheConfuzed1,

We’re talking about a commodity component here, one that would be designed and produced by Qualcomm, not Apple. There’s no way for Apple to “do it right” like they can with a CE device created under the stewardship of Steve; totally unrelated situations. It’s more like AMOLED screens, there’s nothing Apple can do to make them better and build a sufficient enough supply to suit their needs.

  16. “CEOs can be sued for making false statements.” —Bullshit

In theory perhaps. But there aren’t enough hours in the day to recount all the law suits that would immediately be brought if America’s CEO’s were actually held accountable for the truthfulness of the statements they make on a daily basis.

CEO’s and their appointed mouthpieces are professional spin doctors. A company’s current product line and today’s share price—this is what you can believe in. Everything else is smoke and mirrors.

Apple has been much criticized for refusing to talk about future plans but, in reality, Apple is one of the few companies that has the integrity to resist the temptation to spin fairy tales for the entertainment of their eager shareholders.

  18. Amen! I would hope that this finally shuts up the idiots who say that Steve Jobs is going to pass over CDMA because it’s a dead end technology. 3G isn’t even fully rolled out everywhere yet and morons think that over night Verizon and other LTE carriers are going to have their networks up and running and flawlessly covering enough of the US for Apple to give a crap. Does anyone remember when AT&T switched from TDMA to GSM??? It was an utter debacle! The only thing that ended up saving them was the merger with Cingular.
Other carriers and manufactures are currently pushing 4G tech (i.e. Sprint and HTC w/ WiMax) because they have to differentiate themselves to gain sales because they do not have the iPhone! NEW YORK STILL DOESN’T HAVE WiMAX and they are charging everyone with a EVO or EPIC like it was available. Do you think Apple could get away with charging customers an extra $10 a month to use a service that is currently not available in their market? And such a MAJOR market as New York?

With a product such as the iPhone, Apple doesn’t need to do anything until they feel that they and the technology are ready. LTE and WiMax ARE SO NOT READY, AND WILL NOT BE UNTIL AT LEAST 2012!
