Gear Live reviews Apple TV: Small, fast, inexpensive; AirPlay will make people sit up and notice

Apple Online Store“The new Apple TV is a lot smaller, and runs iOS 4, and is priced at just $99. It’s centered around a focus on renting movies and TV shows rather than purchasing them. It’s also got Netflix integration and the new AirPlay functionality that allows you to fling video and audio content from your iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch right to the Apple TV with ease,” Andru Edwards reports for Gear Live.

Five things we like about the Apple TV:

• The size
• Speed
• Home Sharing integration:
You do it once and all your media is instantly available.
• AirPlay: We actually think that people haven’t totally grasped just how big AirPlay is going to be. Apple introduced it as a minor feature for the Apple TV when the introduced it, but once it’s fully rolled out in iOS 4.2 and users are pushing videos they’ve recorded (or really, any H.264 content local or from the web) on their iPhones to their TV with the press of a button, we think people will sit up and take notice.
• Cheap TV show rentals

  1. excuse me, but really… aside from Apple deciding to license the technology, what’s really new about this?

I’ve been streaming tunes from my computer to 4 different sets of amps and speakers for years…

I mean it’s nice that more devices will have this built in, but I’m not ditching my new 5.1 receiver just to get it, especially when I’ve already got an AirTunes Wifi connected to it which does the same thing now…. for free.

  2. I agree with Jdoc. Everyone is underestamatimg the AirPlay’s potential. Can you imagine MLB’s At Bat being streamed from your iOS device to your big screen? How about games? Your big screen for the game board and your iOS device a controller? It will be better than the Wii. We will see once the app developers begin to intergrate AirPlay into their apps.

  4. Airplay will be cool and all but its still a limited solution. The ATV should be able to stream the videos from a network share without the need for iTunes to be running on some Mac/PC or the iOS device to store the files. Its a nice bonus but should not be a requirement.

  6. It’s not the size of your screen that matters, but the size of the encoding. You can have a 720p encoded H.264 file on your iPad or iPhone and if you fling that to your ATV, well, you get 720p video.

  8. Why can’t the TV store all the content? Why do I need a home media server? Or to stream stuff from a computer? The TV should do it all – why do we have all this complexity for something that used to be so basic?

I can’t be bothered downloading/converting/streaming media from device to device – who has the time apart from geeks with no life?

Make the TV the display/the storage/and the network connection and I’m there – otherwise I’ll just skip the next ten years of geekdom.
