Microsoft’s Windows Phone ‘07 a Vista-like dud?

Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac “In the extremely high stakes competition in smart phone operating systems, Microsoft’s new Mobile OS appears to be a stone loser,” Greg Mills writes for Macsimum News. “This is for a number of indisputable reasons.”

“The expensive advertising program (rumored to be half a billion dollars) which will be launched soon, and the efforts of various hardware companies and cell phone carriers rallied to support Vista 7 are likely to be a doomed and completely wasted effort.,” Mills writes. “This will certainly end Microsoft’s presence in the mobile market, which includes both smart phones and slate computers.”

MacDailyNews Take: Or force them to buy RIM.

Mills writes, “Microsoft has failed to preform. Zune, Ken [sic], Vista and now Mobile Vista 7 have all failed to offer anything really new or compelling to excite consumers or investors in Microsoft products or stock. The issue is not as much what the new platform amounts to, but the poor timing and lack of compelling new features.”

“Had this new platform been launched shortly after iPhone took off, it would be different,” Mills writes. “Had this mobile OS been launched about the same time as Google’s Android OS, Vista 7 might have found a market. It is just too late for something that is not really compelling. Windows Mobile 6.5 is expected to remain the Microsoft platform for business smart phones while the new Vista 7 will be the consumer smartphone platform. Neither platform is compelling.”

  1. Yeah, but my guess is MS is going to start giving these away just so the can claim some sort of market-share. You’re going to be seeing a lot of buy one, get two free deals. Then MS is going to start claiming how many units they have activated… blah blah blah.

    Same ole, same ole.

  3. Meanwhile, avoid reading the usual tech news sources this morning the retenue of tech media and bloggers who are on a Microshaft-paid junket either to New York or London are falling all over themselves in fawning adoration of Steve Ballmer, the Dear Leader. Rumored is that the Arang Mass Games have been borrowed from Pyongyang for the Vista 7 Mobile launch.

Let’s hope that this time, consumers aren’t sheep.

  5. People, this is from Macsimum News. Not exactly what I would call main-stream object press. Would you? Is it so terribly surprising that they wrote this (no matter how true it is)?

Move along. Nothing (new) to see here…

  7. Now picking on WinPho7 is is much fun to me as it is to any of you, but seriously… This article is a poorly written piece of junk. He keeps calling it Mobile Vista 7, which is just as cheap and wrong as saying MAC or Iphone like MDN loves to poke fun at.
Let’s attack WP7 for its actual shortcomings like it deserves. They won’t be hard to find.

  9. nah, it won’t flop. WP 7 will take a big chunk of sales from Android – ending Android’s big growth splurg of the last year. and a big question is how well it will do against the new Symbian 3 globally. if Symbian 3 stalls, Nokia may well adopt WP 7 in its place.

Duck for cover when Ballmer discovers, that like everything else, he’s too late for Ken, too.

Is there a Flying Chairs screen saver for Mac?
