“The free app, will be available for both iPhone and Android phones and will allow smartphone users to not only conduct video calls with each other, but with anyone that currently uses Yahoo Messenger for video calls on their PCs, Katz said (Messenger has 81 million users worldwide, according to Yahoo),” Oreskovic reports. “And unlike FaceTime, Yahoo’s mobile Messenger video calling app will work not only over a WiFi connection, but over a carrier’s standard wireless network.”
Oreskovic reports, “A Yahoo spokesperson clarified that the iPhone app has not yet been approved. Apple said in a statement: ‘We do allow apps on the App Store that support video calling on WiFi and 3G networks.'”

I saw this coming when I got my iPhone 4. To me it is a natural fit. I wolks great on my iMac. The best part is that it will work over 3G. I feel Apple will make it to run over 3G next year when they bring the iPhone to Verizon. AT & T ? The AT & T’s roadblock will stay there. I don’t think it will be ever removed.

Video calling over 3G right now would not work very well with H.264, I’d think. Whatever Yahoo is using has to be something of lower quality if it will work over 3G. Sorry, but it’s just not fast enough yet. Once we get networks in most places where the speed is about what Sprint’s 4G is now, then we can make GOOD video calls over the cell network.

I’ve wondered why Apple didn’t include some kind of support to iChat with FaceTime? I remember Skype saying they were going to integrate video calling from iPhone 4s to any PC or Mac running Skype … of course with Skype that might take a decade or two to actually come true.
But if Skype and Yahoo are talking about it, why hasn’t Apple already done it?

I use IM all the time, but I don’t know anyone who uses yahoo messenger.

If they had any confidence that FaceTime is better than the Yahoo software, such a comment would be unthinkable. So … MDN thinks the only way Apple can win this is by cheating?

I do most calls with Skype at the moment. So in the future, I feel the iPodtouch is the much stronger device than the iPhone, at least in countries with modern infrastructure. FaceTime is the logical step for Apple into this future.
