“Analysts are predicting that Apple will begin work on its 7-inch iPad very soon,” Jim Dalrymple reports for The Loop. “They are wrong.”
“The fact is, Apple already has a 7-inch iPad. They have had one of the smaller devices since they started making the 9.7-inch iPad that we have now,” Dalrymple reports. “To be clearer, the two devices were developed at the same time.”
Dalrymple reports, “When Apple decides it is going to release a 7-inch iPad, rest assured it has been in the works for a long time.”

“Could anybody who actually wants a 7″ iPad explain your reasoning?”
It can be palmed.
Not that hard to figure out.
It makes sense that a light iPad will hit the market. Not everyone’s needs are the same. The current iPad is for regular needs. Hopefully, a super maxi iPad with a 12″ screen and wings will come out for the heavy users.

@cspray – You got it. Too small to type on, too big for a pocket. It’s a middle ground that just sounds too awkward. The current size is close enough to a typical paper notebook that it coexists nicely. Accessory makers have even made a few traditional-style organizers that place an iPad alongside a pad of paper.
Nobody here knows – or doesn’t know – what Apple has been cooking up in their labs. It’s not much of a stretch to think that they had a few 7″ prototypes fabbed up just to see what they would feel like. Remember the story that Palm’s founder carried around small blocks of wood for several months so he could decide what size to make the first Palm Pilot.
Want an iPad Lite? Get an iPod Touch.

I guess my long fingers let me hold the iPad pretty easily with one hand. I understand that different people have different needs, I just don’t see the 7″ form factor as being a positive for a tablet. Sounds more like the guys making 7 inchers couldn’t get the power consumption low enough to go the whole way.
As Leland said, iPod touch == iPad lite

I wouldn’t mind a 7 inch iPad, if it was at a reasonable price.
I already read Web pages and books on my iPhone; a 7 inch iPad would make it that much easier, but also easier to handle than a full-sized iPad since my hands are relatively small. And it would fit easier in a standard purse if I wasn’t using my backpack that day. For typing I’d probably use it with some sort of compact Bluetooth keyboard anyway.

A smaller iPad with the same screen resolution would help get rid of the slight jaggies around letters.
Spoiled by the iPhone 4, I know.

I’ll wait for the 5 inch model.
I’ll wait for the 5 inch model.
The next iPad will not be one with a smaller screen; it will have the current size screen with retina display.

I’m still waiting to buy an iPad.
Front facing camera and retina display, and I will have 4-5 purchased ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” /> (full 9.7 inch)
As for the 7 inch version, I do understand why some would want a smaller iPad. But I want the standard size iPad.
People like my mom would pack her 7 inch iPad around more than a full size one.
One lady i know always talks about how she loves the iPad, but wishes it were a little smaller. A employee of my mom’s, wouldn’t ever dream of getting a smaller iPad.
I dunno, maybe it’s a guy thing about wanting the bigger model…
