WSJ: Apple mass-producing Verizon-ready iPhone for sale in first quarter 2011

“Apple Inc. plans to begin mass producing a new iPhone by the end of 2010 that would allow Verizon Wireless to sell the smartphone early next year, said people briefed by Apple,” Yukari Iwatani Kane and Ting-I Tsai report for The Wall Street Journal.

“The new iPhone would be similar in design to the iPhone 4 currently sold by AT&T Inc. but would be based on an alternative wireless technology called CDMA used by Verizon, these people said,” Kane and Tsai report. “The phone, for which Qualcomm Inc. is providing a key chip, is expected to be released in the first quarter of next year, according to the same people.”

“Separately, Apple is also developing a new iPhone model, said people briefed on the matter,” Kane and Tsai report. “One person familiar with the new iPhone plan said the fifth-generation iPhone will be a different form factor from those that are currently available.”

  1. Even if Apple would build such a phone for Verizon, I still would not switch to Verizon. That leech of a company will continue to screw you despite giving back that $50 million miscellaneous chargesthat that was supposedly due to an “glitch.” Glitch, my ass. They got caught!!

  3. With iPhone on Verizon on one side and Microsoft extorting manufacturers to use Windows 7 phone on the other, Android will be in a world of hurt next year.

Look for a 10% to 15% reduction in US Android market share next year.

All bets are off if WebOS makes an HP comeback.

  5. Verizon would have to decide to loosen their draconian grasp of content before this happens, because there is no way Apple degrades/alters/whatever the iPhone experience for any carrier.

But both companies would make a killing if they could arrive at an agreement.
