Neilsen: Android now the most popular smartphone OS in U.S.

According to August data from The Nielsen Company, Android is now the most popular operating system among people who bought a smartphone in the past six months, while Blackberry RIM and Apple iOS are in a statistical dead heat for second place among recent acquirers.

The Nielsen data covers a period that includes a full-month of iPhone 4 availability. (The device became available at the end of June 2010).

Among all smartphone owners, Blackberry still holds the dominant share with 31 percent of the market, though its lead over Apple is declining. Twenty-eight percent of smartphone owners have Apple iPhones, compared to 19 percent who have Android devices.

MacDailyNews Take: There’s very little info to go by besides what’s in the press release above, but we think that these stats are the results of a survey of U.S smartphone buyers, who purchased a smartphone over a six (6) month period, which only includes one (1) month of iPhone 4 sales. Tricky, huh? This is the sort of stuff it takes for all of the Android-based phones put together on multiple carriers to get a “win” over iPhone, besides never-ending BOGO promotions from Verizon, of course.

We continue to contend that when Apple decides the time is right to pull the trigger and moves to multiple carriers in the U.S., as they have already in other countries (where the top smartphone OS picture looks totally different), Google’s Android dream turns into a nightmare as pretty much the sole reason (unless you want fewer apps and more malware while empowering telecoms) to settle for a fake iPhone disappears like the mirage it is.

People do not choose Android phones, they settle for them.

  1. As for Android, currently, in the US, there are 20 Android devices on four major carriers. Each of those phones is exclusive to the respective carrier, and is NOT available on any other carrier. They are:

    Droid X (Moto)
    Droid 2 (Moto)
    Droid Incredible (HTC)
    Garmifone (Garmin)
    Aria (HTC)
    Evo 4G (HTC)
    Ally (LG)
    Backflip (Moto)
    Charm Golden Bronze (Moto)
    Clio XT (Moto)
    Devour (Moto)
    i1 (Moto)
    Captivate (Samsung)
    Epic 4G (Samsung)
    Fascinate (Samsung)
    Intercept (Samsung)
    Vibrant (Sasmsung)
    XPeria X10 (Sony-E)
    T-Mobile G2 (made by HTC for T-Mobile)
T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide (made by HTC for T-m)

Can anyone figure out this alphabet soup???

  3. Numbers don’t lie. NO matter what the cause. Be it Google basically giving away their phones (junk as they are) or Apple staying stubbornly with AT&T, the numbers are fodder for the analysts.

There really is only one solution: Make a deal with Verizon and get the job done. I guarantee that once an Android Froyo user comes over to Apple, he/she will not go back. The guy who sold me the iPhone 4 used to work at Verizon and he couldn’t wait to get rid of his Froyo crap. He agreed that it was the serious tech fanboys who loved the phone, but that everyday people found it clunky and not delivering what it promised.

Make the deal Apple, Make the deal already.

  5. By the way, the above Androids range in price from $0 to $200 (with data plan), and come with variety of system versions, from 1.5 (!!??) to 2.2. Not to mention variety of front-end user interfaces, bolted on by carriers (HTC sense, Motoblur, Enhanced Motoblur, TouchWiz, TouchWiz 2.5, as well as ‘enhanced’ versions of 1.6).

Again, anyone able to make sense out of this alphabet soup…?

  7. The “most popular” in the title is misleading. I seriously doubt if the majority of users of cheap or free basic cell phones even know what operating system they are using. I have no idea what is on my cheap Samsung “phone”. It is by no means “popular” with me.

The “most widespread” or “most used” would be more accurate.

  9. Another thing about that fragmentation; over 26% of Androids are running v1.6 or older. That is a very old system, and those devices are never getting any newer version.

  11. I have always wondered about these numbers. What does smart phone mean? Mossberg and Pogue say that iPhone is a new category of super smart phones or app phones, I don’t think every Android phone qualifies.

Are these analysts counting that every Android phone is an iPhone equivalent? Just like every blackberry even those that can barely browse the web or run apps is counted as a ‘smart phone’. Nokia is supposed to have something like 40% world wide smartphone market share, does anyone believe that Nokia is selling so many more iPhone equivalents? Fact is most of those Nokia ‘smart phones’ are just feature or ‘music’ phones.

IPhone is only 2% of worldwide cell phone market share,
With that 2% Apple is making 39-48% (Cannacord & Asymco numbers) of total worldwide phone (smart and dumb) profits.

If these guys Nokia, Rim, Android are selling so many super smart phones (iPhone equals) as the analysts Market share numbers suggest WHY IS APPLE MAKING 39-48% OF THE PROFITS?

if Android gets bigger market share by producing huge numbers of lower quality phones eating into the 98% it’s not a big deal.

(I of course also agree with the people that argue that iPhone is only one carrier in the U.S and Android is bolstered by BOGO deals)

  13. Survey say: Good little sheep buy Android.
    Sheep say: Baaahhh!!!

I can’t help thinking of Philip K. Dick’s science fiction novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” That’s what we’ve got in 21st-century America: a nation of electric sheep. America used to be a nation of plain old hard-working assembly line sheep, but now all the jobs have moved overseas, so everybody’s plugging in to Distraction Central to numb the pain. Voila! Electric sheep.

  15. Figures lie and liars figure.

    Mark Twain actually said:
“Figures don’t lie, but liars figure”
But with modern sophisticated methods to
    manipulate polls and figures,Twain’s first
    part might not be true.

  17. Folks, this is not the Ryder Cup. It matters not who scores the highest number of sales. Would you prefer a Kia over a Lexus just because they sell more Kia’s? They sell way more PC’s with W7 than Macs, but so who cares. Apple does just fine, as does Porsche and BMW. None of them care to corner the market by making inferior crap. Let it go people, just let it go.

Fact of the matter is IOS is and will always be the leader and best os on the market no matter how much nelson and their wannabe’s wNt you to beleive otherwise. Folks stop lying to yourself just go out and get an iPhone, stop torchoring yourself. Give in to your dreams get the best and cut out all the BS!!!

  21. Even if this is true, I must quote Jobs on this:

“We need to get over this notion that in order for Apple to win, Microsoft has to lose.”

    Just replace Microsoft with Google/Android.

The fact here is, Apple is out to create the best products in the world, and they’ve done a helluva job doing that. All the while, they’ve change the entire music, mobile and tablet industry.

    Marketshare? Whatever…

  23. Apple needs to unchain themselves from ATT, it is painful to be forced to their network. I have family in other parts of the country(Denver) that say ATT is the worst carrier and if it wasnt’ for the iphone they would never be on their network.

When that happens iPhone sales will sky rocket and the wanna be droids/winmobile et al will suffer.
