Nokia app downloads hit 2.3 million a day, well short of Apple’s App Store juggernaut

InvisibleSHIELD. Scratch Proof your iPhone 4!“Nokia today publicly confirmed a milestone for the Ovi Store that also highlighted its current struggle to gain support from developers. The company now says that it sees 2.3 million downloads every day,” Electronista reports.

“The results are positive for Nokia but still fall significantly behind competitors, particularly Apple. iPhone App Store downloads just this month reached 200 downloads per second, or 17.28 million per day,” Electronista reports. “Nokia’s deficit comes in spite of it having much larger market share in smartphones and thus reveals that many Nokia users download few if any apps.”

MacDailyNews Take: We can’t imagine what it would be like to be stuck with a Nokia phone today, thank Jobs.

Just been on the App store and i cant find a wifi hotspot app. If you jailbreak your iphone then sure, you can get one from Cydia, but that is not part of the Jobsian world. Is it? You cant have it both ways.

No, I’m not a typical consumer. I’m an IT professional. The MDN article asked what it would be like to be stuck with a Nokia, and for me, it is great. Having a full range of Linux apps in my pocket works for me. If it works for you to have bundle of throwaway toys in your pocket then great for you.

Let me throw in another couple…

I can plug my Nokia into a TV or a monitor to deliver video and presentations right out of my pocket. No add-ons.

I can transmit music from my Nokia right to my car radio and speaker. No add-ons.

    Can iPhones do that? Nope.

Dont mis-understand me. I love Macs, I have 4 right here in my house. But I’ll stick with Nokia as a phone for now, thanks.

I think you’ll find that the stats dont support what you say. Nokia is still the daddy as far as the public are concerned and if anybody is going to take that crown it will be Android.

    @CM
The N900 is deliberately an uber-geeks phone, yes, but a damn good one. Period. The rest of the population seem to be getting by nicely with Symbian. Show me some stats to say there are more iPhones than Symbian out there?

Try putting the boot on the other foot. Think of every app downloaded as something that somebody can’t do out of the box. Now what do the stats tell you? In my experience of owning an iPod Touch, most apps are trivial bits of fun or a substitute for something that you should be able to do on a normal browser.

Is there an app for watching video over 3G yet?…. yes, its called a Nokia.

Um, youtube works over 3G on my iPad, so I can’t see why it wouldn’t on the iPhone. Plus, there’s Air Video which can stream anything I have on my home Mac to my iPad (including formats the iPad doesn’t support natively).

Further, I believe there are wifi hotspot apps in countries other than the US, it depends on what the carrier allows for.

  6. You know, most people aren’t downloading “Joikuspot”, they are downloading wallpapers and ringtones at the Ovi Store.

Also, you can hook up an iPhone to a tv or projector and give a presentation. Or, you can use your iPhone to control your laptop that is giving a presentation on your projector.

Whatever dude, there are always cool apps that people decide they need that someone might develop. Of course Nokia might have some interesting ones, here and there, but to start to put up lists, you are bound to get embarrassed.

  8. Nokia will soon be the only manufacturer using the Symbian mobile operating system, as Samsung is the latest to announce it will stop making phones that run Symbian. The news comes shortly after Sony Ericsson said it will also stop making Symbian devices, in what could be a fatal blow for the OS.

When you say that all you need is an installation of firefox on your phone, you’ve completely missed the boat. Mobile apps are the mobile web, whether you like it or not. On a screen 4″ or less, you’re not going to have a good experience on any site, especially when compared to the content being delivered to you via a custom app designed for small multitouch screens.

If you can do everything so well on mobile firefox/opera, then why does iPhone dominate the mobile web usage share stats as well? Bottom line: the iPhone may not be the best for you, but you are far from the average consumer.

  12. What is this, 2003? WEP cracking? Good luck finding an old and obsolete encrypted wlan to steal bandwidth from. No one in their right mind penetrate tests WEP these days because it’s already well known that it’s fundementally broken. Neopwn is about as useful as a floppy disk driver.
