Microsoft files patent infringement lawsuit against Motorola over Android

Microsoft Corp. today filed a patent infringement action against Motorola, Inc. and issued the following statement from Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing:

“Microsoft filed an action today in the International Trade Commission and in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington against Motorola, Inc. for infringement of nine Microsoft patents by Motorola’s Android-based smartphones. The patents at issue relate to a range of functionality embodied in Motorola’s Android smartphone devices that are essential to the smartphone user experience, including synchronizing email, calendars and contacts, scheduling meetings, and notifying applications of changes in signal strength and battery power.

We have a responsibility to our customers, partners, and shareholders to safeguard the billions of dollars we invest each year in bringing innovative software products and services to market. Motorola needs to stop its infringement of our patented inventions in its Android smartphones.”

MacDailyNews Take: Android. The multiple patent infringement offender.

We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.Apple CEO Steve Jobs, announcing the lawsuit against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone’s user interface, March 02, 2010

  1. I guess the hardware manufacturers are going to be target of these suits since Google is not “selling” Android. The strategy seems to be to choke Android by strangling those using it (MS- Motorola; Apple; HTC).

  3. In most patent lawsuits, the victim recoups the profits of the thief. I think Google thinks they can prove they aren’t making any money on Android and therefore there are no profits to hand over, so they’re free to steal other companies’ tech.

  5. What? Microsoft spends billions of dollars copying Apple? What a bunch of losers.

Hey Ballmer, you trying to get your bonus now! They cut your freebie and you sue the hell of of companies that copy you coping Apple! Yup, life is normal.

  7. Boy! MDN has it’s hands full now, hating both Microsoft AND Google.

We all know Microsoft is suing Google via Motorola proxy, because Win 7 Phone is such a dud and Microsoft can only play patent troll.

This is all Steve Jobs doing, he set this up with Eric long ago because iOS was to remain stuck to Apple hardware like OS X to Mac’s are, so something had to take the place of Windows on the smartphone, and be dammed if Microsoft was going to get it.

Still Android is going to be the smartphone and tablet OS of the majority 90% of people out there eventually. Can’t help it, get used to it, that’s how it’s going to be.

iOS is locked to Apple hardware and that’s how Stevie likes it.

I for one can’t wait for my 7″ wifi pocket Android or Ubuntu tablet with recessed SDXC slot. (SDXC is faster than most hard drives)

Then I can customize the tablet OS to my liking, not what some corny twerp in cupertino thinks what is cool.

  9. NCG598,

Don’t me a misguided missile. The issue here is Google trying to get into a market by ripping everyone off.

MS is copying Apple on other innovations but if Microsoft has the patents to defend, then go for it!
