Apps are coming to Apple TV one way or another

Apple Online Store“The Apple Dev Team has proven that the Apple TV, just out of the starting gate, can indeed be jailbroken,” Erika Morphy reports for MacNewsWorld. “Generally, jailbreaking a device means developers can gain the necessary root access to develop their own apps or customizations.”

“This particular jailbreak, via the SHAtter exploit that was first used on the iPod touch 4G, is not ready for prime time, according to the developers,” Morphy reports. “It will take more iterations and development work before consumers can being installing third-party apps on Apple TV, Rob Walch, host of Today in iPhone, told MacNewsWorld.”

“One way or another apps will be coming to Apple TV, Walch predicted,” Morphy reports. “Either developers will learn how to install them via the jailbreak or Apple will allow consumers to use them on the device, or both… ‘I think Apple is going to allow people to run certain niche apps, like ABC or Hulu,’ Walch predicted.”

Morphy reports, “One problem could be the interface — Apple TV doesn’t have a touchscreen, and a remote is not sufficient for what would be required. However Apple TV specs do include Bluetooth, Walch pointed out, which would support Apple’s multitouch Magic Trackpad.”

MacDailyNews Take: Or you could just use your iPad.

  1. I feel that apps will come to the ATV both ways. The jailbroken way will be apps that will be mainly for the ATV’s non touch interface like ATV Flash. Then there will be Apple’s. They have apps just for the iPad. They will have them for the ATV. They also have apps for the iOS devices that control functions on your computer. Your computer is a non touch device. There is a app that resides on your computer and one on your iOS device. This could happen to the ATV as well. You can down load the app for your iOS device then somehow install it from Airplay or use your computer to download it and with a flash drive to load it on you ATV via that Mini USB port. That port is there for some reason other than device and support like we found out from the previous ATV.

  2. Apple should brick every Apple TV that is tampered with so these idiots learn not to hack. If you want to hack go and buy a gaydriod.

I actually agree with Jobs. Why would I want to have another computer? And a worse computer and lesa useful. I don’t get it. If I want to surf the net or play games I go to my computer. I don’t want to that on my TV and I don’t think most people want. The Geeks want to but they are a totally different spieces.

And I don’t give much for all the crap I heard from the Set top box conference. This Internet on the TV, computers built in, App stores, TV as an application… ITS ALL JUST ANOTHER SELLING POINT. There is no real value In it, no need for it. As I said. I’m with jobs on this one. The TV should be simple. Just turn It on and use it. Apps, operating systems, personalization only complicates stuff.

Of course, the hackers will probaly have their way. But they are a small minority. Very small. They donut because it’s “cool” not because it’s useful.

  4. Apple certainly has no right whatsoever to brick peoples devices ? What kind of person or where are you from to to suggest such a travesty ?!

I own the device and can do WTF I want with it !!

Aside from that nonsense… GAMES. This things is a hair away from becoming a full blown game console ! The new XBOX 360 arcade has only 4 GB of storage, ATV has 8 GB and an iTunes repository on our home networks to store games and other software etc..
