“The new Apple TV could be Steve Jobs’ best sleight-of-hand trick yet,” Brian X. Chen writes for Wired. “A closer look at the code and the hardware powering the Apple TV reveals that there’s a lot more going on under the hood than the CEO shared.”

Chen writes, “These secret ingredients could be the recipe Apple needs to shake up the television industry.”
iOS and third-party app support: There’s more than enough evidence proving that the Apple TV runs iOS. Dispelling any doubts, Apple recently posted a build of iOS 4.1 specifically for the Apple TV. Now that we know Apple TV runs iOS, it’s likely that third-party apps such as MLB at Bat or ABC Player will be able stream media to the set-top box, too… Daring Fireball blogger John Gruber confirmed that an AirPlay button is showing up in the MLB at Bat app, and he adds that apps using the built-in media controller will be able to integrate AirPlay.
Jailbreaking hacks:Third-party app support will probably be limited for the Apple TV, but that’s where the jailbreakers come in… [Expect] hackers to code some unauthorized apps soon to unlock additional capabilities such as video conferencing via your Apple TV.
‘Lowtide’ app:The Unofficial Apple Weblog’s Erica Sadun, a popular iOS programmer, took a close look at the Apple TV’s software and discovered that it runs an application called Lowtide — the software containing the set-top box’s media interface. Sadun dug deeper and found lines of code that suggest that Lowtide might eventually be extended to other iOS devices.

Look out, Bizzarro! The sky is falling!
LOL
Geez Bizzarro, do you think that if you keep repeating that crap over and over you’ll scare someone with it? You’re the laughingstock of this blog! And, you are an idiot if you believe your own drivel.

This is inexpensive enough to have one for normal use and one jail broken one for “play”. Mine left China on June 28 and is now in Indianapolis enroute to Hawaii. Long trip for free shipping.

Well said. I long for the day MDN gets up to speed and allows us to check off an ignore button like many other sites. Sometimes I think MDN just plants these idiot posts to get more clicks.

Holy Cr@p! An app for each channel and free streaming content (support with commercials just like to day) would mean I can get a la carte TV without the cable/satellite companies! Throw in the ability to record/export a show to my iTunes/iPod/iPad and I’m in! That would give me all the TV/DVR functionality I really need on a day to day basis.
Yee-haw!

As soon as they hack that thing ad stream every channel to it for free I’m in. Or as soon as apple had a model where I can subscribe to channels individually I’m in. Only way I buy one.

Apple could theoretically cut its’ own deals to carry subscribed content. It would interesting to see what baseball and football would do in that regard. The problem by and large is that until Apple can control its’ own airwaves, they are dependent on the internet access provided by other companies. If Time Warner, Cox, and Comcast feel threatened by this model, look for internet charges to skyrocket per byte. AT&T has already removed the unlimited internet usage from Apple products. They will not even give tethering to the folks grandfathered to the unlimited data plan unless they give up the unlimited data plan.
Granted, there are great possibilities, but the device will be at the mercy of the internet providers.

Gee, I don’t see why what Bizzarro said should elicit such gangsta remarks from a couple folks. He’s entitled to his opinions, and who knows, he may be right that the Mac universe will migrate from intel to Ax processors.
It’s ok to attack the message, but not the messenger (though I’ll admit to having done it myself a few times when the political astroturf guys show up).

Yeah if this is only a hobby still, I can’t wait till they go full force on it. I just got mine last night and it’s a lot smaller than I thought it would be, and it’s fantastic and snappy!!!

SwitcherX, don’t really need a app for each channel. I will take a web page where you check of the ones you want listed and link in archive at the media owner.
Stream the media in something my device can’t see and you are dropped. That will be the Flash Tax.

Not exactly a surprise. I predicted in an MDN that this would happen on the day Airplay was announced.
Bye bye Roku!
