RUMOR: Apple buys out Samsung’s AMOLED display supply for 2011, forcing Samsung to switch to LCD

“A tentative rumor today asserts that Apple has been buying Samsung’s AMOLED display supply in a move that would trigger a part switch for Samsung’s own phones,” Electronista reports.

“Well-known Russian leaker Eldar Murtazin claimed that Apple had bought virtually all of Samsung’s Super AMOLED stock for 2011, leaving it with no choice but to switch to LCD for the Galaxy S and Wave,” Electronista reports. “The Korean company is fulfilling carrier contract orders but has allegedly stopped retail deliveries from December onwards.”

Electronista reports, “What Apple would do with AMOLED displays isn’t evident.”

MacDailyNews Take: Put them in a warehouse and let them rot? Muahahahaha!

Electronista continues, “All i[of Apple’s] current devices use LCD, and it so far hasn’t had to switch to AMOLED as it has beaten Samsung in display quality tests.”

  1. Yes, frequently companies like apple like to downgrade the customer offering.

Hey, remember that retina display that was the most beautiful screen ever put onto a device. You don’t really want that, you really want this lower res substitute.

    What a stupid rumor

  3. Assuming this is true, since those displays Samsung needs for its own “tablet” are 7-inch, Apple must be working on something with a 7-inch screen. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

Seriously… Samsung can’t set aside enough displays for its own product. I guess they make more money when they supply one to Apple versus putting one into their own product.

  5. Apple’s cash pile has little to do with this. Maybe they use a few hundred million. What about the other 47 billion? Oh, by the way, this time next year … that amount will easily be 70 billion.

In other words, Apples CASH will be more that the value of the majority of Fortune 500 companies total value. Got it?
