RUMOR: Apple buys out Samsung’s AMOLED display supply for 2011, forcing Samsung to switch to LCD

“A tentative rumor today asserts that Apple has been buying Samsung’s AMOLED display supply in a move that would trigger a part switch for Samsung’s own phones,” Electronista reports.

“Well-known Russian leaker Eldar Murtazin claimed that Apple had bought virtually all of Samsung’s Super AMOLED stock for 2011, leaving it with no choice but to switch to LCD for the Galaxy S and Wave,” Electronista reports. “The Korean company is fulfilling carrier contract orders but has allegedly stopped retail deliveries from December onwards.”

Electronista reports, “What Apple would do with AMOLED displays isn’t evident.”

MacDailyNews Take: Put them in a warehouse and let them rot? Muahahahaha!

Electronista continues, “All i[of Apple’s] current devices use LCD, and it so far hasn’t had to switch to AMOLED as it has beaten Samsung in display quality tests.”

  1. Could Apple be making a stand alone movie camera or a dedicated book reader? They are the only cases where an AMOLED screen would be better (less reflection, easier to use in sunlight and truer RGB colors).

  3. Yes, Jesus, tech reporters are masters of tautology, pleonasm, juvenile arguments, sloppy writing and sloppy thinking… the very definition of journalism.

Note to self: must stop reading this garbage.

  5. Apple did once trade down from trinitron to a cheap and nasty shadow mask CRT format. That moment in time marked Apples lowest point ever. It was a purely simpleton cost cutting measure that almost killed the brand. Once burned twice shy – not going to happen.

  7. @ Edster,

You ignorant slut. Your reading comprehension skills are below that of a 5th grader.

NOWHERE does the article state Apple bought AMOLED at resolutions lower than Apple’s competitors sell.

    Nice try at FUD. NOT

  9. You guys again are swallowing this hook line and sinker.

The next phase in the bashing of apple will be that this is proof positive that the droid is superior and people will rush outand buy them less the supply runs out.

Why in the world would sanding sell their supply to apple and deprive themselves, from their own integrated supply? Another baloney. Sanding probably has a glut of droids and needs to spur sales or halt production and blame it on supply chain problems.

  11. A lot of negativity here but there could be some credibility to this rumor…

I doubt it’s AMOLED but if true, it would be Super AMOLED…and likely what isn’t even in a product yet…Super “Duper” AMOLED???

Seriously though, Super AMOLED has many advantages and the technology is progressing very rapidly…lead by Samsung.

It’s possible that the newer tech may provide better quality in every way while also providing longer battery life.

From Samsung’s perspective, one business unit may be more interested in selling the parts to Apple rather than making less parts in the fewer phones Samsung would otherwise sell. And it could be an economy of scale issue where the part would be really expensive unless it sells in the units Apple demands, but the costs above that level rise tremendously short term as it would require capital investment.

And this isn’t Apple putting its mountain of cash to use. Putting the cash to use would be purchasing the entire business unit at Samsung (the whole company is too much).
