“Everyone loves mobile data — get your Web fix, check your e-mail and peek at your Facebook account while on the go. But no one loves the cost of mobile data. AT&T, home of the iPhone, charges $15 per month for 200MB of data and $25 for 2GB of data. Overage on the 2GB plan comes at an additional $10 per 1GB. If you are truly a massive data user, that can add up,” Amanda Kooser reports for AOL Small Business. “Plus, you can’t share your connection with your employees, colleagues or friends.”
MacDailyNews Note: AT&T’s iPad data plans are actually $14.99 for 250 MB and $25 for 2GB, unless you’re grandfathered in to a renewable unlimited data plan (like us).
“This is where the MiFi 2200 comes in. MiFi is a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot that can share a 3G data connection with up to five devices, including laptops,” Kooser reports. “The actual MiFi 2200 device has already been available through Verizon Wireless (where it requires a contract to get a price break), but now Virgin Mobile, known for its contract-free cell phone plans, has its hot little hands on it. That means you get unlimited data for $40 per month — with no ongoing contract. There is also an option for a $10 plan for 100MB that can be used during a 10-day window. That equates to about five hours of Web browsing. It’s a smart choice for keeping up with e-mail and other simple Web tasks during vacations or short business trips. Otherwise, go for the gold and go unlimited.”
Kooser reports, “The MiFi hardware runs about $150.”

MacDailyNews Take: Competition – real competition – is to be encouraged at all times, especially among overpriced control freaks who like to think they’re more than dumb pipes when they’re not.
If it were unlimited for $25 a month you might have something. That would be real competition.

So I have to carry the hardware MIFI with me wherever I go? Not a good solution.

I’ve got a buddy who has that virgin mifi set up with a new ipod touch and he is one happy damn camper. The mifi is pretty small, so he just turns it on, slides it in his pocket and forgets about it. He uses a cell phone very rarely, so he’s going to maybe set up skype or something similar and he’ll be good to go. It works a lot better than I thought it would.

@Tflint
Have seen how small it is. It’s super small. 59mm x 89mm x 9mm
I wouldnt be surprised to see someone create a case that would hold both an iPhone (or iPod touch) and this MiFi.

Nope. Only 200MB for $15 per month.

A little late to the game on this story. Read about this weeks ago(3?). Bought 2 weeks ago. Works great! And to the person concerned about having to carry around: the thing is tiny! Slip it in my pocket for when I walk the dogs to listen to pandora.

On the AT&T plan, you could use up most of your monthly allotment on a single OS X Software update.
I just got a brand new 13 inch MacBook Pro direct from Shanghi and had to immediately download 1.2 GB of updates.

Yea, but what are the download speeds? Is it better to wait till it offers 4g speeds?

Speed is pretty decent, about like 3g on my iphone as far as I can tell.

Amazes me as to why it’s so much more expensive to run iPhones and iPads in the US than it does in the UK.

Note that $40 a month enables FaceTime anywhere, plus larger than 20MB downloads over iTunes and the AppStore. I’d consider this for $25-30, since I’m still forced to keep my data plan on my iPhone 4, thanks to the generous AT&T (sarcasm).
