“In a blow for holiday video game sales, Nintendo said it would delay the launch its 3DS handheld video game system until February [and a month later in the U.S.],” Dean Takahashi reports for VentureBeat.

“The company also cut its forecast by more than half due to the stronger yen and the delayed 3DS, which lets users see stereoscopic 3D images without requiring them to wear 3D glasses,” Takahashi reports.
Takahashi reports, “Missing the holidays is a big deal, since 40 percent of sales in the game industry occur in the fourth quarter. The delay will leave Nintendo vulnerable to rivals such as Apple… The Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad have grown at such spectacular rates that many believe is coming at the expense of the Nintendo DS, originally launched in 2004.”

I’m not at all surprised by this move. Nintendo wasn’t going to give us 3DS until March anyways

Apple needs to buy Nintendo.

This is a huge blow to Nintendo. Now they really have absolutely nothing to compete against the iPod touch this Christmas. With the Retina display, VOIP options, Facetime, HD video camera and texting options, the iPod touch will be a force to be reckoned with.
I have three children under age 14. Needless to say, none of them or their friends, want a Nintendo for Christmas. They are all saving for iPod touches if they don’t already have one.

Love Nintendo. But doesn’t play with my DS anymore. Why carry around another device when you have an iPhone in your pocket anyway. Of course the games on DS are much better gameplay, but that doesnt matter much when you just want to kill some time waiting for the train. If I really want to play with a good experience, I play on my TV at home.

What I say about Nintendo has little to do with a shipping delay. Don’t be so silly and myopic.

If Nintendo had balls they’d release as many titles as possible for iOS. Have a great Holiday income with software and a great spring with hardware as well.

That’s just poor execution. Also, 3D as long as it requires glasses is DOA.

@Big Als, Exactly. Nintendo could make a bajillion dollars selling even just their old catalog titles on the iOS platform… I’d probably spend $50 just on old Nintendo games. Hell, I’d pay $20 for Donkey Kong!
Of course, that would mean Nintendo would essentially be ceding the handheld gaming market to Apple, which isn’t going to happen.
