  1. Incredible.

Hacker – oops, beg pardon, “Developer” – Dustin Howett runs AppleTV iOS4 software on an iPod ..but can’t switch a camcorder to Manual to hold focus and exposure.

Like pouring water from one jar to another, but not knowing what it tastes like.

  3. Not sure how an App store would work on the Apple TV since there is a lack of storage.

I think Apple have bigger plans for Apple TV. The new Apple TV should no longer be thought of as a product in its own right but as an iDevice connector or hub. The Apps/music/video will run on your iPads and iPhones etc while the Apple TV acts as a hub to the TV.

Apple have stripped out as much expense from the unit so it can become ubiquitous along with future licensing will find it embedded in HDTVs. Family and Friends will be able to visit bring their music/videos/apps and stream them from their iDevice to the Apple TV.

The HDTV will be the digital media hub of your house, simple and elegant and a million miles away from the shitty M$ media centre peecee.

Apple have realised that a central store of media is sooo yesterday as we’re carrying around masses of media in our pocket and all we need is an elegant way of connecting it to our HDTVs and HiFis should we so desire.

  5. Um? If an iPhone has TV output and it does ( ipod Prefs, TV Out, TV signal, NTSC). Than the iPhone could be used as an Apple TV with just the App. And Since EyeTV, AirVideo and Zumocast already Stream Video from the Mac to the iPhone why would you need Apple TV if you have an iPhone or Touch just use the App!

  7. Just because the device lacks mass storage does not mean it lacks limited memory for apps. My guess is that it has some amount of flash memory inboard for settings, prefs and such. Some would also be needed for iOS if it were to ever be patched or updated.

  9. That is EXACTLY what I want for my iPad. AppleTV functionality! I could use my iPad to watch any of the several hundreds of movies and TV Shows I have loaded on my Mac media center’s external hard drive. I have AirVideo but have to deal with DRM issues.

An Apple developed AppleTV-like streaming APP for iPad would be AWESOME! I was hoping for this when I heard the new AppleTV was iOS based.

  11. We grow tired Steve. Where is the Home Hub that you spoke about at the MacWorld 4 or 5 years ago? Let me help here. I would look like the Mac mini with it’s HDTV output with a cable input. Much like the ones we can buy from 3rd parties. This Apple TV and the first one that I own are distribution nodes that will work off Apple’s Home Hub or Cloud Home Hub. IT IS TIME! Drag it out of the lab. Soon.
