Why we’re all better off without a Verizon iPhone

“Be glad that Verizon Wireless isn’t getting the iPhone anytime soon – it’s the best thing that could happen for all of us,” Kevin Maney writes for Appolicious.

“Of course, it may not seem like the best thing for you, individually,” Maney writes. “You probably want the best smart phone (arguably Apple’s iPhone) on the best U.S. network (Verizon’s) – not the best smart phone on a so-so network or a so-so smart phone on the best network.”

Maney writes, “And yet, this is for the collective good. If Verizon had gotten the iPhone much earlier, the entire smart phone milieu would not be as vibrant as it is. If Verizon gets the iPhone now, the market won’t be all it could be… Eventually, the iPhone will no doubt wind up on Verizon. But, hopefully not for another year or so. Let the competitive market do a little more work to make the phones and networks better. We’ll all benefit.”

MacDailyNews Take: Building on quicksand is a recipe for disaster, Kevin.

  1. Although Kevin’s ideas are far fetched, they are interesting. I think he is right to a certain degree. If Verizon would have gotten the iPhone right away, there would have been no incentive for AT&T to upgrade their network as quickly and there would have been much less competition for Apple. Competition for Apple is needed, they will quickly grow complacent otherwise.

  3. Garbage.

    1. Apple doesn’t need motivation to make its products better.
    2. Having an Apple presence on Verizon is a stronger incentive for Google to innovate than not having to worry about the competition.
    3. Having the best phone on the market on your competition’s arguably better network is stronger incentive for ATT to innovate than sitting on the ass of their exclusive agreement.

No part of that article is right.

  5. Networks competed with each other for years and it didn’t make crappy phones any better. Competition is not what made the smartphone market what it is. It was Apple, and only Apple. The best thing for improving the networks more is for Steve to say ‘you’re my bitch’. Period. No one else it seems has ever been able to do this, or has everyone forgotten already how we used to pay monthly fees for crappy games on feature phones and everyone was just perfectly okay with it? I haven’t.

  7. I agree but for different reasons – I’m hoping that one day America will wake up and realise that the WHOLE FRIKKEN WORLD is on GSM, and CDMA just allows your carriers to control and own you even more than carriers in other parts of the world want to control their subscribers.

hmm, MDN magic word is ‘nations’ how appropriate.

  9. Verizon sucks, and there are those twisted, greedy, ignoramuses who believe capitalism exists for their own personal profit rather than “encouraging” competition. It’s the American Way.

According to some, no need to name names.

  11. OK. Here is why the iPhone will NEVER be on a CDMA network. It’s very simple actually. Apple is all about the user experience. With an iPhone, you can talk to someone and surf the web AT THE SAME TIME. Apple even touted this capability in advertisements. This is a Very Big Thing™

Until Verizon can support this capability on it’s network, it will not get to sell iPhones. Apple will not sell a LESS capable phone. Simply won’t happen. Can you imagine how tired Apple will get of answering tech support calls like this:

caller: I can’t get to the internet when I’m on a call.

Apple: Who is your service provider?

caller: You are! It’s an iPhone! (yes people, in general, are this stupid)

Apple: Yes, it’s an iPhone, but who provides you cell phone service? AT&T or Verizon?

    caller: Oh, yeah! Verizon.

Apple: I’m sorry, Verizon doesn’t support that feature.

caller: But it’s a friggin’ iPhone! I saw it in a commercial!

    Apple: I’m sorry, but Verizon’s network is a CDMA…

caller: It’s NOT a CD, it’s an iPhone!

Multiply that by a few million and you get the picture.

A friend of mine got a motorola Droid he was very proud of. He is a total tech geek, but didn’t realize that he couldn’t do that until I pointed it out to him. “Just as good as an iPhone!”… yeah, right.

  13. Verizon should only go without the iPhone if their demands are too odious for Steve to comply. If not, then it means more sales for Apple and less crevices for their ungrateful competitors to hide. Therefore none of you should be against a Verizon iPhone. Holding a grudge because the previous executive leadership turned down Steve’s offer to revolutionize the world is a waste of your time. The past is the past and we’re here to deal with today and tomorrow.

And if you hold a grudge because of a bad experience with Verizon, then you can keep your ATT iPhone and reward ATT’s acceptance of Steve’s vision with your continued payments to their billing department. The ATT iPhone won’t become an endangered species. If we’re lucky enough, you’ll be able to purchase an iPhone for use with any US carrier which is my ultimate dream.

  15. @WindozeKiller,

Amazing. This is the same company that released an iPod nano with a camera and video viewing capabilities one year, running millions of dollars worth of ads that touted the features, only to abruptly remove them the very next. If Steve thinks an iPhone on Verizon and Sprint means healthier earnings for Apple, do you really think he’ll hesitate because of some dumb ass commercial they ran a year ago?

As far as Steve is concerned, if you absolutely need an iPhone that can maintain a simultaneous voice and data connection then you can buy the ATT and/or T-Mobile model. He really doesn’t give a shit otherwise, and I’m sure he’ll express that to you in no uncertain terms should you e-mail him with such a complaint on your Verizon iPhone.
