Apple TV code hints at support for external storage, DVD players, iOS apps, FaceTime

Apple Online Store“matthew858,” posting in the MacTalk forum discusses his “Findings From Inside the new AppleTV Firmware.”

• The iOS app for the AppleTV interface seems to be called “Lowtide” and is the only app currently in this custom iOS build
• Apple TV runs iOS 4.1. According to the requirements for Lowtide iOS 4.1 GM is required
• Mobile Storage Mounter: Looks like the AppleTV might have support for mounting external storage
• Tons of property list files for different types of DVDs or DVD players
• FaceTime services are present

  1. Gross. >.<

Seriously tho, I’ll probably get a lot more excited about this when I have a 54″ LED on my wall… But realistically, I look at the movies in my cabinet (over 150 on DVD) and I ask myself how many of them I really watch over and over. Not really that many. Sure, I’ll always want to own Fight Club and Fear and Loathing and Serenity and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls… But why in hades do I have Wet Hot American Summer? Yes, perhaps unbelievably, it wasn’t really that good. I could have been just as happy streaming it or ripping it, if I REALLY had to have it for the camp value. (ha ha)

TV? Screw TV. TV *blows*. I do not have it at all any more, and my life is better for it. If you need to watch Rock of Love in hi-def, then you should not be allowed to operate a motor vehicle. Okay, I don’t personally care for sports, but I’ll give you that… It makes sense, if that’s your thing. But not much else on TV really makes me ache for HD options. And really none of it makes me feel the need to own it on plastic or otherwise.

  3. So, Where is ken1w telling us we are flat out wrong because the new AppleTV does not run iOS because, there is no way a “mobile os” would be used in a non-mobile device? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  5. My PS3 and Wii can run Netflix. I still want the AppleTV for better connectivity to my iTunes and iPhoto library. The killer for me is AirPlay. If they add FaceTime, I’ll buy a bunch of AppleTV’s for family members around the world.

    MDN Magic Word: Why
    Why not?
