• The iOS app for the AppleTV interface seems to be called “Lowtide” and is the only app currently in this custom iOS build
• Apple TV runs iOS 4.1. According to the requirements for Lowtide iOS 4.1 GM is required

I was thinking today, is the appletv already becoming obsolete? I noticed lots of new tv’s are coming out with internet apps. These apps basically do what the appletv does. One app that seems popular is the netflix app. If I buy one of these new hdtv and it comes with a netflix app, why would I need an appletv? I know netflix isn’t all an appletv can do, but these new tv’s also can display your photos and god knows what else.
This makes me wonder if Apple will eventually come out with its own HDTV, in case these tvs do make it obsolete

My cousin has a TV, DVR, and Wii… all of them provide access to NetFlix, none of them make the other obsolete.
The AppleTV’s core feature is to get iTunes to the TV. Whether it’s your library on your computer or to directly access the store.

All i’m saying is paying ala carte on itunes sucks. Paying $9 per month for unlimted streaming and still getting them by mail rules.

I place the video files into iTunes and I’m currently playing them via AirVideo to my iPad. To each his own I guess… I prefer owning things I really like, because I enjoy watching or listening to them more than once. This is why I (and large percentage of the population) purchased CD’s and DVD’s. iTunes a la carte model isn’t any different.

i tried to get into that whole rip, handbrake, and keep in itunes , your favorite movies. problem is I rarely watch movies more than once. If i rip all these movies, they will just sit there taking up space on hard drive.
I also wonder if people have wasted a whole bunch of time handbraking these movies. Everything nowadays is about hi def. Isnt everyone handbraking SD movies? If its not a HD version your ripping and collecting , I say why bother. maybe I’m missing something?

I think it’s quite feasible that Apple will introduce a TV at some point. There will be lots of “smart” TVs, but whether standalone or integrated, many people will want a bridge to iTunes. Right now, the aTV2 is a good way to introduce AirPlay and other Apple functions.

Seriously tho, I’ll probably get a lot more excited about this when I have a 54″ LED on my wall… But realistically, I look at the movies in my cabinet (over 150 on DVD) and I ask myself how many of them I really watch over and over. Not really that many. Sure, I’ll always want to own Fight Club and Fear and Loathing and Serenity and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls… But why in hades do I have Wet Hot American Summer? Yes, perhaps unbelievably, it wasn’t really that good. I could have been just as happy streaming it or ripping it, if I REALLY had to have it for the camp value. (ha ha)
TV? Screw TV. TV *blows*. I do not have it at all any more, and my life is better for it. If you need to watch Rock of Love in hi-def, then you should not be allowed to operate a motor vehicle. Okay, I don’t personally care for sports, but I’ll give you that… It makes sense, if that’s your thing. But not much else on TV really makes me ache for HD options. And really none of it makes me feel the need to own it on plastic or otherwise.
