Pew research study finds that Apple dominates tech news

Apple Store“A new study confirms what some in the technology industry have long sensed: Apple commands an inordinate amount of the media’s attention,” Brian Stelter reports for The New York Times.

MacDailyNews Take: It’s not at all inordinate. Apple invents things. They lead. Apple makes news; poor copiers and followers do not.

“A yearlong look at technology news coverage by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism found that 15.1 percent of tech articles were primarily about Apple; 11.4 percent were about Google; and a meager 3 percent were about Microsoft.”

MacDailyNews Take: To the innovator goes the coverage. To the derivative go the yawns.

Stelter reports, “The Pew study, to be released on Monday, assessed technology coverage by 52 newspapers, broadcast and Web sites from June 2009 through June 2010. The release of a new version of the iPhone was the No. 2 most-talked-about tech story during that time, representing 6.4 percent of all coverage, and the release of the iPad was No. 4, representing 4.6 percent. Microsoft released a new version of its Windows operating system during that time, too, but it garnered one half of 1 percent of all coverage.”

MacDailyNews Take: Because the sufferers who haven’t yet figured out how to switch to Macs don’t care about “new” versions of Windows (that aren’t “new,” by the way), they settle for it.

  1. Yes Ispeicher, I am! It’s just that my production line has been slowed down by the availability of cheap imported news from Countries who’s labour costs I cannot compete with, but worse than that, I invested in a zune production line thinking that that would be the next “and one last thing” that would give me the edge. Just goes to show how important the decisions we make in life are.

And in other news, anthropologists declare Steve Ballmer as the long sought-after missing link and furniture manufacturers up and down the West Coast report record profits.

  5. Maybe it’s time for Apple to take part of that $45billion in the bank, and spread the wealth by paying for news coverage/advertising for all these little guys that are being left behind in their unproductiveness? Not only is it the fair thing to do, but it’s best for the poor children who can’t afford those elitist expensive Apple computers.

  7. It’s only the best performing stock over the last decade and the company that revolutionized the music industry, the smart phone market, tech retailing, tablet computing and is driving much of the online video market (BTW- the new ATV is shipping today, not a rumor check your order status). Mindshare among young adults going to University is higher than ever- foretelling a huge long term market shift away from Microsoft. They are not batting 1.000 (see mobileMe and Ping), but will get the ball rolling downstream.

Meanwhile, Windoze has released the latest service pack for Windows NT (read Windoze 7) and is selling a retread of their ancient PDA OS as Windoze 7 mobile (yawn).

  9. Don’t forget that Apple is brilliant in managing the flow of news, as well. In the Spring we get iPad launch news. Summer, we get iPhone launch news. In the Fall, we get iPod launch news. In the Winter we get Mac hardware news. Interspersed we get lots of other announcements, new stores, new milestones, new software, etc. As an investor, there’s always news to look forward to.
