IDC: Apple’s iAd to match Google’s share of U.S. mobile ad market within 90 days

Apple Online Store“Apple may be gaining share in the U.S. mobile advertising market this year at the expense of Google and Microsoft,” Olga Kharif reports for Businessweek. “Apple will end the year with 21 percent of the market, according to estimates provided to Businessweek.com by researcher IDC. Google’s share will drop to 21 percent, from 27 percent last year, when combined with results from AdMob, the ad network it bought in May. Microsoft will drop to 7 percent, from 10 percent.”

“Apple, maker of the iPhone and iPad, didn’t sell mobile ads last year. In January, it bought Quattro Wireless, which had 9 percent of the market in 2009, IDC said. Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs announced the iAd network in April and launched it in July,” Kharif reports. “Apple’s push into mobile ads may be a reason for its rivals’ market-share declines. Since June, the number of brands that have agreed to run ads through Apple’s iAd network has doubled, said Natalie Kerris, a spokeswoman for Apple,”

“On June 7, Cupertino (Calif.)-based Apple said it had $60 million in iAd commitments from marketers, including food and personal-care product maker Unilever, electronics retailer Best Buy, and satellite-television service provider DirecTV,” Kharif reports. “Unilever, whose first iAd made its debut in July, is ‘extremely happy’ with the results of its ad campaigns, Rob Master, the company’s North American media director, says in an interview. More than 20 percent of people who click on Unilever iAds—which feature video and an interactive game—check out the ad a second time, he says.”

Kharif reports, “Yahoo!’s share in mobile ads will drop to 9 percent this year, from 12 percent last year, while Espoo (Finland)-based Nokia will suffer a decline to 2 percent, from 5 percent, according to IDC.”

  1. This is where Apple can really deliver a swift kick to Google’s groin. Goggle is nothing more than an advertising company. It’s search engine is simply a delivery method for ad revenue. If a significant chunk of that revenue finds its way to Apple rather than Google, then Google is in for a world of hurt.

  3. I do not like intrusive advertising and those that sell it or buy it turn me off. I’ll gladly pay to AVOID advertising.
In the age where effing lower third ads crawl all over TV shows and every ballpark is named and covered up like a dumb-assed NASCAR racer, ads have largely lost their punch.
BTW- I never click on Apple’s iAds or anyone else’s & do not intend to.

  5. The moral of the story is “Don’t fsck with one Mr. Steven Jobs!”

Just ask Adobe, it only took apple 6 months to beat that little biatch down!

What made it even more hilarious was how they lifted the ban on compilers after ADBE was mortally wounded. YES!

Google is going to rue the day they pissed off SPJ. Rue I say!

Steve has a list of evildoers that all conspired to “kill” apple at one time or another.

It’s like one of those revenge movies where the kid that got picked on comes back as a super hero and gives everyone what they deserve!

    iAWESOME!

  7. Schmidt! Schmidt! Schmidt!

When Schmidt back stabbed Jobs and came out with Android…

(for those who don’t believe this look at the Google phone prototype here BEFORE copying iPhone :http://googlified.com/google-android-phone-prototype/)

…Google’s marketcap was larger than Apple’s. Apple surpassed Google in 2009 and is now 100 billion larger (269 to 169b). Absolutely weird that the non Applefan press lauds Android as a Big whacking SUCCESS for Google!

When people look at google ads on their phone they are NOT looking at ads on their desktop, notebook etc so the sum gain for Google page views is zero. Also carriers and OEMS are loading Yahoo, Bing, Baidu on their phones and using their own non Google app stores. And it made Apple compete in the AD BIZ. Brilliant Mr. Schmidt!

Apple is so calm about it all they are still having Google as their default search. (perhaps its a Apple plan to keep Android around to eat up the low profit end – Apple already making 39-50% of worldwide total phone profits – to avoid Monopoly, EU etc issues. Perhaps Schmidt having coffee with Jobs was not just a photo setup but Google is in on the plan… ? wild speculation).

  9. @Troy

Midas was a mythical king to whom the gods gave the gift of being able to turn anything he touched to gold.

So, the expression is ‘The Midas Touch’. No apostrophe.

But you’re right about applying to iAd and Apple!
