“Apple has made a small but important change to Ping that improves it considerably,” Peter Kafka reports for AllThingsD.
“It’s not enough to make the much-maligned social network a real winner, but it’s a good a start: An update to iTunes now allows you to interact with Ping directly from your music player, instead of having to make a visit to Ping itself,” Kafka reports.
Kafka reports, “So now you can recommend songs to your friends, and see the music they recommend, at the same you’re actually listening to songs.”

MacDailyNews Take: Apple’s Ping was obviously the result of an induced labor. As a result, Ping is an extreme preemie. Apple should have kept the poor thing in the incubator and not thrust it into the world until it could live and breathe on its own.
Personally, I could do without the social network crap. 95% of what passes for communication on Facebook is a total waste of bandwidth. Ditto for Twitter. There’s no reason to expect anything different from the iTunes community.

You know usually I criticize MDN for being to far up apple’s butt. But I have to say way to go MDN for not letting apple get away with this poor excuse of a social network. If they improve it I will be among the first to say bravo Apple

Would be 100x more useful if it included the App store. That’s where the action is and would really get people using it.

There’s no bigger Apple supporter or cheerleading section for Apple than me but Ping? It worked so counter intuitively unlike most of the Apple universe. And worst of all just wasn’t any fun. It looks like an Ultra Beta or Alpha version, raw right outta the labs.
In fact I’d say as others have that iTunes itself needs a major rehaul and needs to give back more manual control to the user. And sync specific items as needed, etc. without penalty of erasing other items. OR not sync at all, etcetera, excetera, excetera.

Re: disgruntled. I agree! I used that feature all the time and hated to see it go! I wish Apple would warn us in the release notes when features are being taken away, or give us the option to turn such features back on via the preferences. (I imagine a terminal hack will show up soon to reenable it, but I haven’t seen one yet.)
