News Corp’s Rupert Murdoch may be preparing to launch two iPad newspapers

Apple Online StoreThe Guardian’s Roy Greenslade blogs today about a “hush-hush unit being set up for News Corporation under the aegis of the Wall Street Journal’s managing editor Robert Thomson, as revealed in a memo posted by Romenesko (well done again, Jim).”

In the memo, “Thomson apologises for being ‘necessarily vague'” in announcing only that the project will be led by Jim Pensiero, a Journal deputy managing editor who has been appointed editor-in-chief, and Gabriella Stern, of Dow Jones Newswire, as managing editor,” Greenslade reports. “According to paidContent, [another News Corp.] project is understood to be a national US newspaper title that will serve only tablets (such as iPads)… headed by New York Post executive editor Jesse Angelo.”

Greenslade writes, “So, is it possible that News Corp is going to launch two outlets – one populist and the other more serious (and business-oriented) – in the near future? That sounds feasible.”

MacDailyNews Note: Last month, Dawn C. Chmielewski reported for The Los Angeles Times that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. was planning new national digital newspaper for Apple iPad and iPhone.

  1. The word “national” sounds huge in the nomenclature of print publication, but every fart app is “national” too. However, I think for the people who still ask me “what device is that?” when they see my iPad, the familiar idea of a “national” newspaper could draw them to what, for them, is an unfamiliar product.

  2. You gotta hand it to Ol’ Rupert. He can smell money and opportunity better than an anteater can smell ants. Rupert makes the other media moguls look like absolute dimwits who are stuck in the past century.

  3. … unexpected. My “first post” in this thread was critical of Murdoch, and … voila! … it has disappeared. Note that I said nothing “political”, nor anything slanderous, nor anything libelous. I merely questioned the quality and quantity of “fact” in a Murdoch publication. !ZAP! … and it’s gone. Like making it disappear would change the reality of the case.
Someone is a bit sensitive about the facts as presented – or not – by their preferred icons.

  4. @interesting, don’t worry, your post wondering where the first post is, will also disappear. That’s the way a cleanup operation works. It happened yesterday to me, when I responded to some Nokia apologist. His post disappeared.

  5. … is that the posting from “X” is still in place. The one denigrating the President of the US then (falsely!) identifying him as a “Kenyan”. That is something like identifying me as either “Irish” or “German”, though I was into my 20s before I ever left North America – and that was to act as a US soldier during the VNE. And – other than my time as a troop – I’ve never been out of the US for a month straight!
My post related to the article. The post from X seems less so, if at all. No sense. No logic. Just irrational partisanship.

  6. Faux Newz is a brand and not a statement in fact. I also find it funny/strange that a company run by a guy who bought his American citizenship ( so he could buy TV stations ) with a sweetheart book deal for then Speaker Newt Gingrich, constantly pimps crap about illegal aliens.

  7. A typo crept into MDN’s reposting of Greenslade’s article:
launch two outlets – one populist and the other …
    should have read
launch two outlets – one propagandist and the other …

@ At least as interesting …
Didn’t you know that X is the Andrew Dice Clay of MDN’s boards? (Less the wit, that is.)

  8. Anonymous coward ‘X’ sez: “Hopefully one dedicated to removing that assclown from office who thinks he is community organizer in chief. Stupid Kenyan.”

    A couple observations:

    1) ‘X’ is quoting the Neo-Con-Job speaking points of the week, aka he’s ‘cloning’ the line. Boring. No imagination. No thinking-for-himself. Yawn.

    2) My usual observation that HitTrolls absolutely NEVER identify themselves. They are ALWAYS anonymous. They are CONSISTENTLY cowards. You know who I am! But you bums are hit and run and ‘nah! nah! you can’t find me!’ babies. What does that say about the ideologies you support? They’re cowards too. Reminds me of old time fascists. Not accusing! Just saying!
