“Playboy, the adult magazine run by Hugh Heffner, has agreed to remove all risqué content from its iPad app in order to avoid breaching Apple’s strict anti-obscenity rules,” Matthew Moore reports for The Telegraph.

“Anyone forking out £3.20 for the digital version of the magazine will have to do without the explicit photo spreads that titillated generations of teenage boys,” Moore reports. “The Playmate of the Month, one of the magazine’s most popular photo features, will only appear on the iPad as a tasteful headshot.”
Moore reports, “Playboy agreed to censor its content in order to secure a place in the App Store, from which any software which Apple considers ‘obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory’ is banned… Apple is almost unique in the technology industry for taking an active stance against pornography. In April Steve Jobs, the chief executive, wrote to a customer who complained about Apple’s self-appointed role as moral arbiter to insist that ‘we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone.'”

MacDailyNews Take: If you want to view nudity on your iPad or iPhone, use the browser like everyone else.
There really is something wrong about Playboy showing from the neck up.
This is ridiculous.
First of all, Playboy isn’t porn.
Second of all, who would pay for this?
Finally! I can actually read the articles without that smut getting in the way.
How ironic, now that we finally have an Internet capable device( iPad ) that we can hold with one hand.
This is still considered explicit titillation in some cultures.
Hahahahahhahaha!
Shouldn’t be a problem for most as we are always being told “I buy it for the articles”
“There really is something wrong about Playboy showing from the neck up.”
No kidding.
Guess Apple will have to deal with all the customers who’s iOS devices get PWNED when they visit online porn sites.
The need for porn will never go away as it’s a educational experience in the pursuit of hard wired pro-creation human needs. Apple blew it’s opportunity to maintain and control it, even profit by it so people can access it safely with a X-rated section.
Fixing people’s computers I always come across people’s “choices” and severe paranoia. What they are afraid of is beyond me, sex is normal as long as it’s legal and consenting. Everyone does it, everyone needs it. So why be afraid or ashamed of it? Just be considerate and not do it in front of others in public places that’s all. Your not going to hell for something that God gave us to use. Lighten up Jobso.
The Playboy App on Android only shows you pictures from the neck down.
Tells you a lot about Fandroids, doesn’t it?
That’s just Bulls**t.
If Playboy Enterprises were tech smart, they would make an HTML5-savvy web app and show all the T & A they want.
People seem to confuse Apple’s refusal to allow porn into the App Store with the ability to view porn on iOS devices, for which the App Store is totally irrelevant.
The Betamax parallels are coming back to haunt Apple!
Like, Jobs is great and stuff but this must be one of his worst decisions, I mean c’mon, those Playboy photos are very elegant and what is wrong with a beautiful naked woman?? Absolutely nothing..
And MDN, why is there a take on this issue when it’s really no take at all? Surely you can express your opinion about his without having to fear the wrath of Steve, no?
“…the App Store is totally irrelevant.”
I agree there.
I haven’t found any “must haves” that make the App Store relevant.
The thing with websites… is that they don’t have your credit card information and it’s harder, much harder, for them to extract money from you. Apple’s App store is genius in that it allows you to just click to buy… knowing that your information is relatively safe.
I don’t like news about virtual prostitution
So this is to study limited parts of the anatomy?
Maybe they should call it “Neck Ed. 101″…
If Apple wants to make these rules and restrictions about their products then that is their choice. I have no problem with that: their products, their rules. Like MDN said, there are other ways to get adult material on an iPhone or iPad.
Get Zinio App and scribe to the actual Mag.
I about I choose what I get to put onto my iPad/iPhone and let the parental controls do their job?
Where does this end? I’m glad Apple doesn’t run the the internet.
So are you saying that playboy has actual very good information besides the porn pictures?
If you have goo creativity, you don’t need good looking woman to shown in your magazine. Is that simple.
Which neck?
I have an excellent pornographic section on my iPad built from H.264 video I converted from downloaded explicit videos on my Mac. You don’t need the App store to build your own pornographic video and photo palace.
@lobol
It ends at the app store. There’s no slippery slope here. Stop being melodramatic.
