“Smartphones like the iPhone are built from a collection of components, which are sourced individually from suppliers—e.g. the iPhone 4’s cellular baseband (the core chipset used in mobile phones to handle voice and data communications) comes from Infineon and its GPS chipset from Broadcom,” Steve Cheney reports for TechCrunch.

“The dominant supplier of CDMA chipsets is Qualcomm, the largest fabless chip company in the world,” Cheney reports. “Apple has never procured baseband chipsets from Qualcomm before.”
“Sources with knowledge of this entire situation have assured me that Apple has submitted orders for millions of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone run due in December,” Cheney reports. “This production run would likely be for a January launch, and I’d bet the phone is nearly 100% consistent with the current iPhone 4 (with a fixed internal insulator on the antenna).”
Cheney reports, “I can’t say with 100% accuracy that an iPhone will hit Verizon store shelves in January, but all of the signals point that way.”

The chips are for a Sprint based iPhone. Just wait and see.
Oh, and the Beetles are also coming to iTunes in January.
Isn’t China Unicom a CDMA carrier? Wasn’t there plenty of debate about a deal with them, necessitating a CDMA device for their network?
Let’s not forget, Verizon is NOT the only carrier in the world using CDMA.
If true, I hope it’s Sprint instead of Verizon. I really want T-Moble Steve!
Who were the Beetles?
It’ll never happen. These “rumors” have been floated out there for years. And who’s behind them? Have you noticed there is only one party that actually benefits from them? Hmmm…
@ Dr Billy
“These “rumors” have been floated out there for years.”
So, a new rumor must be false? I think If someone has insider knowledge of a contract from Apple to buy these, that would be a pretty strong indicator, stronger than most past rumors, that Apple might just be going to Verizon.
It’s going to happen eventually. It just will.
US Cellular FTW
MDN magic word “might” happen
@Macromancer
Because someone with “insider knowledge” has been claiming that a Verizon iPhone is coming out every 3 months since 2007. I have no doubt that one will come out. But, an article using “someone with insider knowledge” means absolutely nothing.
And the next Duke Nukem will be released at the same time.
When has Apple ever gone backwards technologically? I see an LTE Verizon iphone before CDMA.
Ok,
If I switch to Verizon from t-mobile, buy an iPhone, will I be able to use it in my business travels to Europe?
Isn’t the world GSM?
Does this mean I will have to keep my unlocked GSM phone and I will not be able to use my Verizon iPhone?
hmmmm
Verizon is evil. They are actively trying to end Net Neutrality with Google. The should be boycotted forever. I love AT&T. Rollover minutes + talk & data together make them a much better carrier.
agree with @baldeagle. highly unlikely that Apple would go with 3G CDMA at this late stage. now if these are LTE chips for Verizon’s 4G network, then this makes more sense. i might have to hold on to my 1st gen iPhone a bit longer to see how this develops.
Could be for a Verizon iPad.
Could be for China.
If for China, might as well make a few million more for Verizon.
@DG and @baldeagle
LTE will only roll out to a few markets this year. CDMA will be around for a few years. It’s not that hard putting a CDMA chip in an iPhone. This comes down to the contract with AT&T, politics with Verizon and the fact that Apple cannot keep up with demand now.
And as I said, there are several fairly large CDMA operators OUTSIDE the US. It is quite possible that Apple may want to try CDMA elsewhere first, so that when the AT&T exclusivity contract expires in 2012, they have already worked out the CDMA kinks and are ready for Sprint/Verizon.
Much more urgently than Verizon, Apple needs to bring that second iPhone manufacturing plant online as soon as possible. They are losing so many sales to Android from people who walk in to buy an iPhone, and the salesman sells them an android because iPhone is simply not in stock. Americans tend to be a very, very impatient bunch, and when they want something, they want it now. Many more iPhone sales were lost to Android due to stock shortage then due to unavailability on Verizon.
Sprint 4G, Baby. Either iPad or iPhone would be sweet!
If iPhone does come to verizon, them crashes their network, I’ll be laughing at those verizon fanboys.
@x
Who are “The Beetles”???
Multiple carriers, whether CDMA or LTE, Verizon or Sprint or T Mobile, is bad news for the Android market.
A Verizon iPhone? Possibly, but ONLY when they activate their 4G network.
CDMA is dead. Give it up.
Sprint would be nice. Verizon’s plans are every bit as bad (expensive) as AT&T’s. That’s why I’m on T-mobile. An iphone that could be used with Sprint would be great!
What is a fixed internal insulator?
No such thing. Either it’s insulated 100% or it’s not.
Giving the iPhone to Verizon is like installing Android in your iPhone.
Bad.
Perhaps the CDMA is for China. However, I think there could be a CDMA/G4 phone out in the planned stages. There should an exclusivity deal with T-Mobile, Sprint, At&t. Verizon can be left to advertise jaded commercials.
