European Commission chooses Apple iPhone, HTC over RIM BlackBerry

“This is turning out to be a rough week for BlackBerry maker RIM when it comes to international relations: the latest blow is that the European Commission has opted for the iPhone and HTC handsets over the BlackBerry to roll out to its employees,” Lance Whitney reports for CNET.

“‘Following this evaluation, the HTC and the iPhones emerged as the most suitable platforms for voice/mail-centric mobile devices. As a result, the Commission currently supports these two platforms,’ spokesman for the EC wrote in an e-mail statement sent to CNET on Wednesday,” Whitney reports. “The new choice of phone will affect around 2,500 of the organization’s 32,000 employees, according to the spokesman.”

Whitney reports, “The thumbs-down [for RIM] from the EC comes amid growing concerns and complaints from various countries about RIM’s BlackBerry network. Some government officials have argued that RIM’s tight security and encryption protocols prevent them from monitoring and accessing customer data in the name of national security.”

  1. As Face Time takes hold, Big Brothers in every country all will need to watch a lot of videos. Girls, keep your shirts on. Big Brother is going to be watching.

Millions of smart phones and billions of video. Someone is going to have to put in lots of overtime. Pass the popcorn!

  2. Indonesia is the latest muslim country complaining about RIM being too secure; that break in a see what their citizens are up to. There’s a joke in here somewhere but I’m not going to ruin a thread.

  3. Lokiz, no. RIM processes the e-mail off their servers which I believe are in Canada. Apple lets you use what ever e-mail service you want. If a government have access to that service in their country then they can do what ever the people of that country has let them do.

Did you not see just a few days ago where the Federal Government past a law that (I believe it is) the FBI has the right to see all corporate e-mails WITHOUT A WARENT and the company is band from telling anyone it has or is being done! THAT IS HERE NOW IN THE USA!

  4. Lokiz,

There is a justification to this: the EU’s administrative functions is so riddled with corruption that being able to monitor what’s going on is absolutely essential.

  5. silverhawk, I need to get back to work and get something done today. This government is working hard to change what we expect them to be protecting. Truth, character and integrity are getting harder to come by in our USA government. Overseas, it’s even harder to come by and some never had it. I hate to see use loosing our.

    Have a good day.

  6. Jersey_Trader;

It seems that the law you’re talking about has been passed almost ten years ago (The Patriot Act), and no new additional snooping permissions have been afforded to the FBI by this one — just the ability of the court system to question the justification of requests for information.

Obviously, this isn’t just hair-splitting, but the point remains that the reach of FBI deep into the people’s privacy has been there ever since 11 Sept event. And FBI seems to love it so much, they simply don’t want to give it up…

  7. singidunum, this is a NEW amendment to The Patriot Act.

“With its proposed amendment, is the Obama administration merely clarifying a statute or expanding it?”
    http://www.dnforum.com/f254/fbi-access-e-mail-web-data-without-warrant-thread-427621.html

I do not know who first asked for this amendment. I am more concerned that as an American and a business owner, I CAN NOT DISCLOSE THAT THE FBI IS DOING IT OR HAS DONE! I am now assisting this. If something was done, I find out and can’t let anyone know that this occurred. This is wrong! They would not need to cover up something that was on the up and up if nothing was found!

  8. Sorry singidunum, it is the “Obama administration”.

“The Obama administration is seeking to make it easier for the FBI to compel companies to turn over records of an individual’s Internet activity without a court order if agents deem the information relevant to a terrorism or intelligence investigation.”

Yes, Obama is grabbing more power here too. Remember when they were all upset the international phone numbers were being tracked? Times are changing!

  9. ALL PRIVATE COMMUNICATION SHOULD BE BANNED FROM PUBLIC (GOVERNMENT) SCRUTINY. RIM IS RIGHT.
ANY democratically based government works FOR the people, and as such it is accountable to the people. It has NO RIGHT TO KNOW your personal thoughts or communications. just as support workers at a company has no right to know the personal plans of the CEO. The government works FOR THE PEOPLE and ALL PEOPLE, regardless of creed, colour, or even belief in a “higher being”, ARE CREATED EQUAL. This would be a universal law if all people had at least the intelligence of a mollusk. The US government, as evidenced by historical record, has killed more “innocent civilians” in their SHORT EXISTENCE than any other government in the world and then rationalized it! MURDER is MURDER. If you are defending your soil and family from an invader, it can be fully justified. If you are one someone else’s soil fighting, no matter what your pea-brain justification, YOU ARE THE BAD GUY! If I were to act like the contemporary US–or Israeli–government, I would break into my neighbours house every night and beat them so bad they couldn’t walk just in case they decided to get up in the middle of the night and break into my house in an attempt to rob me and possibly kill my family; better safe than sorry… The freedom-crushing, Big Brother-like laws forced upon US citizens as a direct result of THE US GOVERNMENTS INABILITY TO DO ITS JOB IN THE FIRST PLACE is incredulous, and I am amazed at how well US citizens take it “up the ass”, no questions asked, all in the name of those two magic words “National Security”–Same words used to describe the German governments actions circa 1942 btw, except in the US it’s not only one man [Hitler] but the ENTIRE GOVERNMENT who is at fault, as evidenced by the continued and unchanged policies after GWB’s departure… The US population naively, but true to form, believe their governments tell the truth no matter what drivel spews out of politicians mouths at the moment designed to absolve their own accountability, as long as it’s eloquent. Words out of ANY politicians mouth is wholly intended to deceive and sway public OPINION in favour of whatever policy is being pushed at the moment! Simple, yet so hard to grasp. History has shown that governments themselves are more often than not responsible for heinous acts of violence against their own people in order to justify and sway public opinion in their favour regarding the righteousness of any actions they take in order to deal with whatever threat they endorse without question. This unquestioning “faith” is often MISTAKENLY equated with patriotism, esp. in the US. Ask yourself: If you were a terrorist, whose aim is by definition to terrorize, and you wanted to send a message; would you pick early morning–during which time you would NOT sustain the MAXIMUM amount of casualties to get your point across, or would you pick late afternoon when life is teeming for maximum damage/effect? I think, if you were intelligent, which Osama Bin Laden has PROVEN he is by AVOIDING CAPTURE BY THE US FOR OVER 10 YEARS(!), you would think so as well. It took the US, by the way, only weeks to locate Saddam Hussein–who had no involvement whatsoever in 9/11(!?)–underground, below the surface of the deser! If you were the government, on the other hand, and you wanted to make it APPEAR as an UNSEEN, UNDEFINABLE ENEMY–a “terrorist” could be ANYBODY, even a citizen, McVey–attack, yet at the same time, minimize casualties but still justify military action against and force of their will on any and all enemies to their political power as they see fit; internal and external. Since there’s no more USSR.
Why do I bother? US voters have already proven that they are comprised of mostly stupid morons. Evidence: GWB 2 terms! Oh yeah. GWB, according to himself was told by “god” he would be president, not by voters… Any sane man would take that as a fact; being told of your destiny by a fictional being. Science is the simple belief in the truth of observation–eye witness, if you will–while Faith (the cause of SO many deaths) is the belief in that which cannot be observed, proven, or even RATIONALIZED. Belief in God (this is true for ALL monotheistic religions) is based wholly on faith that the words written by the alleged followers of the alleged “prophets”–whom in todays society, we refer to as “mentally unstable paranoid delusional personalities” in modern mental institutions–, subsequently edited, translated, and re-compiled–to fit the needs of the time–over the last 2000 or so years into a black book, is the truth. Humans, after all, are well known for their honesty. Not once has a human lied or embellished a story, right?
