Foxconn plans new $100 million iPhone factory in China, sparks CDMA iPhone talk

“Foxconn is building a new [US$100 million] factory dedicated primarily to iPhone production in what could be a sign of Apple’s expansion to other US carriers, reports from China’s Xinhua News Agency claimed on Monday,” Electronista reports.

“The plant, which will start construction later this month, will be handled by the local subsidiary Futaihua Precision Electronics and already has workers,” Electronista reports. “It comes as Apple is already rumored to be significantly expanding its production plans to add support for other networks. ASUS’ former manufacturing arm Pegatron is rumored to be starting CDMA iPhone production this month to cater to demand for a Verizon launch as well as possible launches at Sprint, China Telecom and other CDMA networks.”

Electornista reports, “A T-Mobile iPhone is also a possibility for a second GSM version.”

  1. @MDN: “Plans” should be changed to “Is About To Start Construction On”. Your use of the word Plans implies a long time until construction will begin when in fact it will begin later this month. So the planning stage is well past now. Planning is done. Logistics for delivery of construction materials is where they are now. Anyway I’m excited to see a new plant underway to help Apple further expand their iPhone empire we all enjoy being a small part of.

  2. So much for all the over-analytical bullshit on how iPhone supply constraints would prevent a Verizon model from launching soon.

Of course there’s no definitive proof here that this is directly tied to a CDMA iPhone and the naysayers will be none the quieter. The bottom line is that Apple is working hard to expand supply for current and future demand. The possibilities are not limited by the supply issues we see today.

  3. TOO LITTLE TOO LATE.

NONE WANTS iphone any more except the fanboys.

TOO LITTLE TOO LATE. Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile doesn’t want the iphone anymore. They have way better phone in Android DroidX, EVO 4G

  4. Assuming everything goes perfectly, which is unlikely, don’t expect phones from this plant for six to nine months. This is in line with both AT&T and Verison moving to LTE (the *real* 4G). In line with that I would not be surprised if we see an iPhone 4G sometime next spring (not next summer). So I’d expec next spring there to be two variants of the iPhone: one supporting the GSM + LTE standards and one supporting CDMA + LTE standards.

While it is possible to build a system that supports GSM+CDMA+LTE, the last I heard the chip to do that was so large and power hungry it was not practical for Apple to build any phone they would actually want to ship to customers.

I say, LTE is the *real* 4G because WiMax (even the mobile variant) has significnat issues when the phone is moving faster than about 35 mph with regard to the tower. Want to download to your phone/laptop while riding in a car doing 50 mph on a freeway in the urban canyons of a city? If doing it over WiMax the data rate will drop *significantly* to 3G or lower speeds.

Sure, the Verison iPhone must support both CDMA and LTE — for the next couple of years at least. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if the iPhone 6 ((iPhone = iPhone 1, iPhone 3G = iPhone 2, iPhone 3GS = iPhone 3, iPhone 4 = iPhone 4, iPhone 4G = iPhone 5) due out summer of 2012 just supports LTE and is not backward compatible with 2.5G and 3G systems. But these older standards might hang on until 2015 or so. We’ll just have to see.

  5. Curse all you want blind fangals. 2 to 5 years from today just remember Doni was here and warned iphone would be taken over by Android wildfire.

Just today report came from Nealson Android outsold in USA 27% vs iphone 23%

Take your english with you to the grave along with your AAPL tissues you would call shares 2 to 5 years.

    I predicted GoldMan sacks crooks
I predicted AMD $8 while it was at $42
I don’t want to disclose any more, it’s scary.

It’s maths and number games, future and decided by numbers. English is worthless in stock market world.

  6. Doni, you need to get a LIFE! Did you get any sleep last night? Your speech has a lot to be desire. Did some one did you wrong? Start by cleaning up your vocabulary. You sound very angry. Mac Daily News should shut you down.

  7. I joked before that Apple should buy the Foxconn factory that builds iPhones and iPads, and dedicate its production capacity for that purpose. Having Foxconn build a new factory for iPhone production (and run it) is even better.

The “new” problem is probably going to be acquiring components fast enough, such as the display. It doesn’t help to double production capacity if you can’t double availability from suppliers.

I have one more off-topic comment. Before correcting someone, be sure you haven’t committed any errors. Funny!

“Your speech has a lot to be desire.” -> Desired
“Did some one did you wrong?” -> DO you wrong

“Just today report came from Nealson Android outsold in USA 27% vs iPhone 23%”

Yes, but 89% of IPhone users will stick to iPhone with 6% going to Android

Compare: 71% of Android sticking with Android and 21% upgrading to iPhone.

Also, 33% more Blackberry users plan to switch to an iPhone than to an Android.

Superior user experience will prevail. Do the math!

  10. @Idm,

Please stop with the twisting of numbers.

71% sticking with Android vs 80+% sticking to iphone. First that will change, and iphone users are most are cult, they will take a garbage from AAPL and still stick to it.

Unlawyal Android doesn’t mean iphone gain, it could mean B.Berry, Palm, Windows, Nokia Simbian and the rest. We are already hearing many ATT customers switching to Sprint EVO 4G.

27% Android vs 23% iphone is the most important. Twiking numbers aside, more users with Android than iphone. Scary part is Android just got started last year vs iphone more than 3 years. Android 2.2 is just arriving and the reviews are very good. Just a year and Android went from 0% to 27% surpassing iphone. Be blind at your own risk, Android is spreading like wildfire, and it’s only getting started.
