Counting iPad, Apple is no. 3 in worldwide portable market share

The new MacBook “Apple is usually considered an also-ran in the global PC market,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. But [in a chart] taken from a note to clients issued Friday by Deutsche Bank’s Chris Whitmore, tells a very different story.”

Whitmore believes that investors will increasing include tablet computers when assessing market share trends, and [his] diagram illustrates what that might look like,” Elmer-DeWitt reports.

“Starting with IDC’s global portable computing market share survey for the June 2010 quarter, he has redrawn Apple’s (AAPL) share, adding the 3.27 million iPads the company sold in the quarter to its 2.47 million MacBooks and MacBook Pros,” Elmer-DeWitt reports. “‘When including the iPad as part of the NB [notebook] market,’ he writes, ‘Apple leapt over Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba and Dell in terms of global unit share.'”

Elmer-DeWitt reports, “Viewed this way, Apple goes from being No. 7 in the worldwide portable computer market to No. 3, after only Hewlett Packard and Acer. And it’s not stopping there, says Whitmore.”

  1. WHAT!!! A real count on ALL the computers!!! I am shocked. I was thinking that they would hold off until Apple’s logo was on 75% of the computers being used to read their FICTIONAL count of what they considered to be the (Windows) PCs. You know the boxes that are connected to the office time clocks, shipping scale, cash registers, … Not the small hand held computers that Apple makes that don’t run Windows or Flash!

He wasn’t discussint that subject. He was focusing on unit numbers, since they have always put Apple below the top five. Everyone knows that in terms of profit, Apple is the undisputed champion, and has been for quite some time now, so that chart would have been pointless. Let’s not forget, in last quarter, Apple has almost surpassed Microsoft in total revenue, and is on track to do that (for the first time in history) after this quarter, which will make them the most profitable IT company and the second most profitable US company, after Exxon-Mobile.

But to see them achieve the No. 3 spot in number of unit sales is nothing short of remarkable, when you realise that they are competing against all those $200 netbooks and $400 laptops.

Agreed! Where’s the Revenue/Profit charts comparing AAPL to the Top 10 tech stocks and versus others!!!!!!

AAPL has recorded Record Profits for how long now? Bad times two years ago to now!!

AAPL will go to $301 in 2010 then $401 in 2011!

more New products will be coming out the next four months ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” /> More AAPL exposure and Profits!!!!

  4. Always keep in mind that when they tell you that the world wide or USA PC market grows say 4% that it is hitting the 4% using Apple’s 30% Mac growth. When they are forced to really count ALL the computers including the Mac, iPad, iPhone and iPod touch (and maybe even the Apple TV) this is a very different picture. I think Microsoft and the PC box makers are seeing the light at the end of their product lines now.

Time to update those resumes boy and girls.

  5. I sold my Asus laptop [7 months after buying it] then bought MBP 15″… along with my iPad when on-road and in office i have completely dumped PC’s…

All in the space of a month. Even gave my mom a iPad for her birthday!
    😎

  6. So as little Apple nitch computer maker takes 3rd, then 2nd, and later 1st place, does $300 a share look correct or does $400 or even $500 a share? If the stock grows at the rate of the company (you would think) $300 a share plus 30% is about $400 a share in a year with out Steve Jobs’s next “Just one more thing”! Did you know that the students in college are 75% or more MacBooks? They may get a job some day. What do you think they will buy and use at work and home?

So, what is Apple’s stock really worth? $500 or maybe even … We will see!

  7. @RicMac: We can’t correct typos after submitting. The t key is right next to the g key. He was typing “discussing” but I guess he doesn’t have his auto correct turned on so before he noticed the typo, he pressed the Submit bar and the typo became a part of this historical record because MDN refuses to make editing comments a feature priority change that has been sorely needed here since day one. 
