“The software, labeled iOS 4.1 beta 2 build 8B509b, was made available in five distinct distributions, one each for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod touch 3rd generation and iPod touch 2nd generation,” AppleInsider reports. “Most critically, the release is expected to include a fix for proximity sensor malfunctions on the iPhone 4.”
AppleInsider reports, “During a press conference two weeks ago, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said the company is aware of problems with the proximity sensor on the iPhone 4 and added that his team was working on a software fix that is expected to be included in the next iOS update — presumably iOS 4.1.”

MacDailyNews Note: We have iOS 4.1 beta 2 running on our iPhone 4 units, but since we have never experienced proximity sensor issues, we can’t confirm whether that issue has been addressed or not.
No proximity sensor problems for our two iPhone 4s nor with two other family members’ either.
Already had two hangups from prox sensor using b2. Reported to apple. Also had issues rebooting after installing on iPhone 4. Had to force reboot it twice. It kept trying to boot and then rebooting itself after two min or so. Once I finally got it to boot it booted every time since. I submitted bug report to apple. Please post if you see this issue.
I dont have any issues during normal use, but I am able to reproduce it and beta 2 does not fix the issue.
Anyone know if Beta 2 fixes bluetooth handsfree issues people are having in their vehicles? (Beta 1 did not fix it, although it did add AVRCP.)
It did, however, fix the mms image viewing issue.
Never had the issue on my iPhone 4 however that phone was stolen on Saturday. I bought new iPhone 4 Monday an have had the proximity issue 2xs. Not a big problem just really annoying.
Quit teasing us and release iOS 4 for the iPad. This waiting is almost as hard as waiting for the next Peter F. Hamilton book!
Yes, the only real issue I have with iOS4 is my two jawbone’s sound like crap to other folks… I don’t know what they changed in the bluetooth connectivity setup, but I do recall issues with a prior OS and bluetooth as well. Really frustrates me…
I have problems with the proximity sensor, it often tries to launch facetime when I have it next to my ear causing it to go into speaker mode and hard to shut off.. (facetime should be disabled if wifi isnt even active but that’s a different issue.)
FYI, This only seems to happen when I’m using it in my left hand… My guess: The proximity sensor is in the middle/right of the screen and in your right hand it gets positioned over your earlobe. When in your left hand, it’s looking into your ear.
I’m having the proximity sensor issue, as well as complaints about clarity of calls when using my bluetooth headset — I can here interference/crackling noise as well. Still think greatest phone ever, but those issues have to be addressed.
I’ve had problems with the proximity sensor but found a fix. An Apple tech had me restore my phone as a “new iphone.” When I got my iphone 4 I set it up with a backup from my 3G. The new restore as a new iphone took care of the proximity sensor problem for me.
Perhaps they could make the iPhone 3G not be SO FRICKIN’ SLOW! I swear, the iOS update makes the 3G almost unusable.
@Sarasota I agree!
If this does not fix the proximity problem I will be going back to my 3GS, my phone is unusable as a phone.
@Crow T. Robot, I’ve held off updating for that reason, but there’s an extensive thread at Apple here – http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2475859 – with several potential solutions. Also, 4.1 may fix the isue accordign to this article – http://thenextweb.com/apple/2010/07/27/does-ios4-1-fix-slow-iphone3g-units-yes/ . Good luck.
Can they do something about the now abysmal battery life on my 3Gs, which was fine under 3.1.3?
Well, Gizmodo claims that the problem is sorted, but then, y’know, it is Gizmodo, so…
@Crow
Agreed. Either support the 3G fully or don’t support it at all. My 3G feels like an ancient brick now.
Maybe it’s Apple’s way of pushing people to buy the iPhone 4…
@ Crow & @Bongo, Another article on how to speed up your iOS4-running 3G, from RoughlyDrafted’s Daniel Eran Dilger – http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2010/07/07/how-to-speed-up-your-iphone-3g-running-ios4/#more-4367 . Might help tide you over until 4.1 is released.
This happens to me all the time. If I cradle the phone between my cheek and shoulder and start talking in a matter of minutes the phone is either trying to facetime or is making another call or has muted my call and is off looking up information in my address book. It has to do with my cheek touching the screen after the proximity sensor activates the screen. It is VERY frustrating. It would be nice to have a sensitivity setting for the proximity sensor.
I have even had it where it happens if I am just holding it to my face. Arrgggh! this fix can’t come soon enough.
My wife’s iphone 4 has this issue. When she took it to the Apple store they told here that “the shape of her ear was confusing the phones algorithm” and there was nothing they could do about it and she would have to wait until the next update. That was the funniest explanation I have ever heard. What is not funny is the amount of people she has hung up on and face dialed while on the phone. Hey Apple, get this fixed already.!!!
If you none of the above problems, you are lucky. I experience them on 3 different iPhone4 units… It’s maddening…. There is no bigger Apple fanboy than I….
I have experienced the proximity sensor issue several times. It seems to happen when I hold the phone against my shoulder.
