“The software, labeled iOS 4.1 beta 2 build 8B509b, was made available in five distinct distributions, one each for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod touch 3rd generation and iPod touch 2nd generation,” AppleInsider reports. “Most critically, the release is expected to include a fix for proximity sensor malfunctions on the iPhone 4.”

AppleInsider reports, “During a press conference two weeks ago, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said the company is aware of problems with the proximity sensor on the iPhone 4 and added that his team was working on a software fix that is expected to be included in the next iOS update — presumably iOS 4.1.”

MacDailyNews Note: We have iOS 4.1 beta 2 running on our iPhone 4 units, but since we have never experienced proximity sensor issues, we can’t confirm whether that issue has been addressed or not.

  1. Already had two hangups from prox sensor using b2. Reported to apple. Also had issues rebooting after installing on iPhone 4. Had to force reboot it twice. It kept trying to boot and then rebooting itself after two min or so. Once I finally got it to boot it booted every time since. I submitted bug report to apple. Please post if you see this issue.

  2. Yes, the only real issue I have with iOS4 is my two jawbone’s sound like crap to other folks… I don’t know what they changed in the bluetooth connectivity setup, but I do recall issues with a prior OS and bluetooth as well. Really frustrates me…

  3. I have problems with the proximity sensor, it often tries to launch facetime when I have it next to my ear causing it to go into speaker mode and hard to shut off.. (facetime should be disabled if wifi isnt even active but that’s a different issue.)

FYI, This only seems to happen when I’m using it in my left hand… My guess: The proximity sensor is in the middle/right of the screen and in your right hand it gets positioned over your earlobe. When in your left hand, it’s looking into your ear.

  4. I’m having the proximity sensor issue, as well as complaints about clarity of calls when using my bluetooth headset — I can here interference/crackling noise as well. Still think greatest phone ever, but those issues have to be addressed.

  5. I’ve had problems with the proximity sensor but found a fix. An Apple tech had me restore my phone as a “new iphone.” When I got my iphone 4 I set it up with a backup from my 3G. The new restore as a new iphone took care of the proximity sensor problem for me.

  6. This happens to me all the time. If I cradle the phone between my cheek and shoulder and start talking in a matter of minutes the phone is either trying to facetime or is making another call or has muted my call and is off looking up information in my address book. It has to do with my cheek touching the screen after the proximity sensor activates the screen. It is VERY frustrating. It would be nice to have a sensitivity setting for the proximity sensor.

I have even had it where it happens if I am just holding it to my face. Arrgggh! this fix can’t come soon enough.

  7. My wife’s iphone 4 has this issue. When she took it to the Apple store they told here that “the shape of her ear was confusing the phones algorithm” and there was nothing they could do about it and she would have to wait until the next update. That was the funniest explanation I have ever heard. What is not funny is the amount of people she has hung up on and face dialed while on the phone. Hey Apple, get this fixed already.!!!
