U.S. iPhone 4 units start arriving, get activated, produce photos and videos

Invisible Shield for Apple iPhone 4!“One of the iPhone 4 owners who received a unit early hasmanaged to get his unit activated with AT&T and has posted test photos and video from the phone’s camera,” Electronista reports. “Apart from validating the very high-resolution screen, the samples provide a more detailed impression of the image quality than a Czech leak from earlier.”

Electronista reports, “Video samples also show that the phone produces particularly high quality 720p footage. Unlike some phones, which sacrifice the bitrate to achieve HD, video from the iPhone 4 shows few of the visual artfacts seen on other phones, such as blurring, blockiness or hitching frames.”

  1. What do these people expect? Bad quality? Honestly, you know Apple… they do actually mean it when they say on their website that “[t]his changes everything. Again.”

This iPhone will stun the world with its awesomeness. No, I’m not a member of the Apple cult. I just know a successful device and a good strategy when I see one. Of course, that doesn’t mean I’ll buy it!

  2. By the way, I was referring to these words in the Electronista article: “video from the iPhone 4 shows few of the visual artfacts seen on other phones”.

  3. Streaming the video doesn’t help to see how smooth it is… at least right now on my cable modem. Network congestion is usually high at this time of day.

Wow. What a difference in looks between the old and new iPhone!

I’m glad the new one will be my first although I might appreciate it more if I had one of the 3 earlier versions, especially the first one.

3 year contracts up here in Canada so I wouldn’t have been able to upgrade if I’d gotten the 3GS last fall, so I thought I’d wait for iPhone 4. I am SO glad I did!

  4. Of course, things like the video quality is never mentioned by most of the tech media that are compelled to claim that the iPhone is “catching up” to other phones in the market. This is the problem with just evaluating a product based on comparing specifications.

This is why most IT geeks don’t understand Apple products. They are more than their specs.

“What do these people expect? Bad quality?”

Yeah I expected good quality from Apple. Hell I expected more than that when I waited online, early in the morning, to get my WiFi iPad on launch day. Since then I have had nothing but problems with wifi, battery life, freezing up, etc. Message boards were rife with similar complaints, a Google search will verify that, but it has been discounted to just a scant few units and not really a problem.
To me it’s a problem. I just tried to post to another thread and my iPad froze to the point of NO button working and just hung searching for wifi until the MDN app crashed and my post was lost. Now I have to go to my laptop to post this.
With my schedule I just haven’t had the time to set up a “Genius Bar” appt. to see if they can acknowledge and rectify this problem. This is MY first Apple product and the quality part of it has been a let down.

And please refrain from the juvenile comments of taking this “piece of junk” off my hands for insulting amounts of money or even no money at all. All that does is underscore the general Mac Fanboy stereotype who wishes to do nothing but dump on Microsoft, extol the virtues of Mac, and hide or at best marginalize any legitimate issues or complaints with Mac hardware or software.

I love my iPad, but without a reliable internet connection it is nothing more than a castrated media device.

No company produces products completely free from defects. Given the hardware and software design complexity of Apple’s product line, I would say that they do pretty darn well. And there are some things that are out of their direct control, including production quality issues and shipping.

Apple generally does a very good job in dealing with defective products, but you will have to make the time to go to the Genius bar for help. It has been a while since the iPad launch and complaining on this forum will not help. Please write back *after* you have been to the Genius bar and let us know how Apple took care of your iPad problem.

Wait… so you bought this thing almost three months ago, but you haven’t had time to have it checked or exchange it, and you are here ranting about it? Have you ever purchased a product that had a problem before, ever in your life? The normal course of action to actually bring resolution to an issue, is not to wait MONTHS and whine about it online, but to get off your butt and take action to get it resolved. They probably would have swapped it out immediately. It is NEVER going to be fixed if you just sit around and whine about it. Put the laptop down, and find a way to get back to the store and take care of it.

Seriously. Hypothetically, if Apple has sold 3,000,000 of them so far, and 0.001 % of them had issues, that would be about 3,000 bad units. Sure, that’s a lot of bad iPads, but not unexpected. Does that warrant a general condemnation of Apple’s quality? I think not.

“I love my iPad, but without a reliable internet connection it is nothing more than a castrated media device”

How is that Apples problem? I too have internet problems, when I can’t use my Vonage VOIP phone, or DL movies, I don’t blame those devices, cause I know what the problem is

  9. @HotinPlaya

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! There is that blind Apple ignorance I was talking about. Can’t be the Apple product, has to something else. That would suggest that the sun doesn’t shine out Steve Jobs butt.

    Think before you post. ™

Sorry to hear you’re having problems especially since this is your first experience. Needless to say Apple is no different to other companies in that they make a few duds here and there; but overall these experiences are few and far between with Apple.

I personally had to take 2 iPhone 3G’s back to Apple due to defects, but the 3rd phone has performed like a champ for almost 2 years now; even surviving being left at a beach overnight!

I know it’s a pain but take it back to the Genius bar and let them have it fixed/exchanged because you’re only prolonging your suffering!

  11. In defense of HotinPlaya, he was really very specifically referring to the statement regarding the internet connection (“…without a reliable internet connection it is nothing more than a castrated media device”). Clearly, reliable internet connection is provided by your ISP, and not by your device.

Now, if the device itself is defective, warranty takes care of that. You’d do the same thing for an X-Box — bring/send it in for repair/replacement. At least with Apple, you can schedule a Genius Bar appointment at any time of day (and in NYC, any time of night, as well). Since this is your first Apple device, you should know that Genius Bar folks tend to bend over backwards to get the issue resolved. In vast majority of cases, when there is a problem (WiFi, memory, optical drive, display, iSight webcam…), they just replace the whole device with a new one.

Surely, you can spare an hour on a Saturday or a Sunday to get this resolved?

  12. Definitely sounds like you have a bad unit. I know work can often get in the way of visiting the Genius bar. My experience with iPhone problems (my closest point of comparison since my WiFi iPad is a working model) is that I walk out with a new iPhone.

Regarding the “castrated media device” when without a internet connection, I guess I don’t know what you were expecting. Do you want to run full applications? While many apps do require the internet, any laptop or desktop will lose some functionality when without a connection (web browsing, email, etc). I’m not really sure what you want the iPad to do.

  13. Thank you to those who responded to my posts with courtsey and solution suggestions rather than “macboyflameposts.” To the others please don’t even pretend to know what my life or obligations consist of. Suggesting that I’ve had almost 3 months to resolve this problem is an epic fail as you have no clue about me, my family, or obligations.

When I have the opportunity to rectify this problem I will. It took me a while to even recognize this as a problem as I did at first blame my internet connection/ router on the poor service. However no one in there right mind can suggest that it is the internet when I encounter the same problems no matter where I am or what router I am using to access the internet.

@singidunum hotinplaya was suggesting that the internet was the problem and not the unit, and that I should realize like he does that it cannot be the product it has to be the service. (Classic fanboy response.) I can’t even tolerate that cause whenever I’ve complained about internet service, once they hear you have a router they blame that. Doesn’t even matter what the problem is, it has to be the router. Talk about Adobe being lazy, that’s the laziest solution to troubleshooting I’ve ever heard. The suggestions from Apple as well all point to the router, but like I said it cannot be every router I come into contact with.

Apple is responsible for the product no matter what the production line looks like. Not to mention this is probably more of a software issue than hardware and I don’t think Apple outsourced that part of it. My wife has a paper route and in a weeks time we cannot misdeliver more than .1%. We get charged 5x the amount we get paid if a customer complains about a misdelivery. If we get multiple complaints from same customer the amount we are charged goes up exponentially. So please allow me not to buy into the fact that .1% of products of an initial launch is to be acceptable and to be applauded. We take the brunt of the complaint regardless if it was because of us, someone stealing the paper, delivery truck running late, etc! I have no sympathy for Apple or their production line in this regard.

However, I do know all products have duds that are produced. This post was not meant to be me whining about my iPad but more directed at certain people who can do nothing but extol the virtues of Apple and turn a blind eye to anything negative. I think some of the responses I’ve gotten have proven that and has shown who some of them are.

I cannot tolerate people who adhere to a certain ideology and turn a blind eye to all dissenting positions no matter if they contain a valid point or not. This is one of the biggest problems with politics today as no one can see past party lines, while the American people suffer for it.

Apple is not a perfect company, no company is. However one would never know that upon reading posts from certain members as well as MDN itself. I know, I have the choice not to read the site and go somewhere else, but in a weird twisted way I do like MDN and the fact that I get a nice helping of Mac news that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise.

I also like reading the posts of certain members here. As they have to right to post, so to do I, and if it’s a dissenting opinion I would hope that there would be a greater maturity level present than just flaming or spouting off closed minded opinions just to support a point of view.

I do intend to post a resolution to this iPad problem, and I fully expect that Apple will probably swap out my iPad with a new one. This is not because I will accept no less, but more because I feel Apple is that type of company. From a company standpoint, at least when SJ has been running the company, I don’t think I’ve seen them not own up to a mistake and not resolve it in a manner that remains true to their core values.

I hope in the future to expand my Apple products as I know in general they do produce quality products. No where in my posts was there a general comment claiming Apple doesn’t. I have alway suggested to people the Apple line up due to lack of viruses, etc. I’ve been trying to persuade my wife to take the plunge and after 12 years I think there may be a Mini or better yet an iMac in my not to distant future. Anyway, I’ve said my fill, thanks!
